AbbVie

Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Company scope is the whole of AbbVie; Allergan Aesthetics R&D is included only where it is in discovery, and its commercial and manufacturing activity is out of scope. Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.

Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.

Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.

Summary

The reviewed sources identify three T1 initiatives with an AI-discovery commitment change involving AbbVie first disclosed in the year to 5 October 2026, and two in the year before [>ABBV-E01, >E03, >E06, >E07, >E08]. The three in the later year were all announced between 21 and 29 September 2026: a collaboration with Iambic to use its AI platform in small-molecule discovery, and two federated AI model initiatives with other pharma companies [>ABBV-E08, >E06, >E07]. We identified no commitment change in company lab digitalisation (T2) in either year in the searched sources. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 13 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, none with ambiguous vacancy status [the 13 R&D theme postings among >ABBV-R04 to >R50]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Announced commitments

First public What was announced Terms disclosed Issued by First AbbVie confirmation ID
13 Dec 2024 Agreement to acquire Nimble Therapeutics, including its oral peptide pipeline and its peptide synthesis, screening and optimisation platform; the release says the acquisition "allows AbbVie to utilize Nimble's proprietary peptide synthesis platform to enable the discovery and optimization of oral peptide therapeutics", and its About Nimble paragraph says the platform combines "powerful machine learning and computational methods" $200 million cash at closing, plus interim funding payments and a potential development milestone payment AbbVie and Nimble (joint release, AbbVie newsroom) Same release ABBV-E01
27 Mar 2025 Federated OpenFold3 Initiative of the AI Structural Biology (AISB) Consortium: OpenFold3, a structure prediction system from the AlQuraishi Lab at Columbia University, "will be fine-tuned using proprietary data from AbbVie and Johnson & Johnson" in a federated environment run by Apheris None Apheris (Apheris site), AbbVie executive quoted None found in the reviewed sources ABBV-E03
21 Sep 2026 Multi-year collaboration under which the companies will use Iambic's AI platform to identify drug candidates in small-molecule discovery across immunology, neuroscience and oncology; the collaboration "will utilize Enchant v3", Iambic's multimodal transformer model Upfront payment, success-based milestone payments and tiered royalties; amounts not disclosed AbbVie and Iambic (joint release, AbbVie newsroom) Same release ABBV-E08
22 Sep 2026 AISB Bind, a new federated initiative through which AbbVie, AstraZeneca, Bristol Myers Squibb and Johnson & Johnson "will collaboratively train an AI model to predict how small molecules bind" to their protein targets, for virtual screening and lead optimisation; training begins in September 2026, with final models expected in early 2027 None Apheris (Apheris site), AbbVie executive quoted None found in the reviewed sources ABBV-E06
29 Sep 2026 AbbVie named a founding member, with argenx, Lundbeck and Takeda, of the Antibody Developability Consortium, which is building a dataset of antibody developability data designed for machine learning; Ginkgo Datapoints is training a foundation developability model, which Apheris' infrastructure is being used to deliver into each member's environment for fine-tuning Dataset target of 10,000 antibodies; financial terms not disclosed Ginkgo Datapoints and Apheris (GEN report of their announcement), AbbVie executive quoted None found in the reviewed sources ABBV-E07

AbbVie issued two of these rows jointly with the partner, on its own newsroom [>ABBV-E01, >E08]. The other three were announced by the companies that run the federated networks, Apheris and Ginkgo Datapoints, and each quotes an AbbVie executive [>ABBV-E03, >E06, >E07]. We found no AbbVie confirmation of these three. www.abbvie.com was blocked, so any confirmation published only there was not reachable. The Antibody Developability Consortium release was read through a GEN report, because Business Wire and the Ginkgo investor site blocked access; its date rests on the Ginkgo investor feed and the GEN date [>ABBV-E07].

Nimble counts in T1 because the release states that AbbVie will use the acquired platform for discovery (the platform-access limb of C42-2). The machine learning wording appears only in the About Nimble paragraph, so this is the weakest counted row [>ABBV-E01]. AISB Bind is a separate commitment from the OpenFold3 initiative, because its release says it "extends the approach" of the first initiative, not that it extends the earlier agreement (C42-1) [>ABBV-E06].

By event date, we counted two T1 initiatives with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025): Nimble and the OpenFold3 initiative. We counted three in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026): Iambic, AISB Bind and the Antibody Developability Consortium. By first disclosure, the T1 count is also two in W0 and three in W1. T2 is zero in both views and both years. Three T1 milestones were disclosed: the Nimble completion and three further contributors joining the OpenFold3 initiative in W0, and the OpenFold3 results report in W1 [>ABBV-E02, >E04, >E05]. Existing capabilities first disclosed numbered two in T1 and one in T2 in W0 [>ABBV-E16, >E19], and two in T1 and none in T2 in W1 [>ABBV-E11, >E23]; ARCH is tagged to both themes and so appears in each [>ABBV-E16]. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes. The Labs of the Future automation item, an existing T2 capability in W1 under rule set v0.4.2, is process development and is recorded as context under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary [>ABBV-E17]. Under the opposite reading of borderline clarification C42-2, treating Nimble as an acquired asset rather than platform access, T1 would be one in W0 in both views [>ABBV-E01]. Under the opposite reading of C42-4, counting the BaseLaunch incubator partnership as a T1 commitment, T1 in W1 would be four by first disclosure and unchanged by event date [>ABBV-E21].

Coverage is partial for both themes in both years. The company press release archive, consortium, academic, per-event-type search and negative-event search families are complete. The annual report, results presentation and transcript, partner newswire and venture arm families are partial. The coverage table marks every family except the press release archive and the results materials as not comparable between the years, so no comparison between the years is made.

Several AI items outside the two themes, in clinical development, manufacturing and enterprise AI, are recorded as context (see Context).

Identified recruitment

On 6 October 2026 the careers.abbvie.com vacancies sitemap listed 1,649 listings by each reviewer's count. Both reviewers screened titles against a common term list, one reviewer also screened 16 further postings it judged relevant, and 55 requisitions were classified from their duties. We observed 13 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class, 6 T1 and 9 T2; the two roles tagged both appear in each split [>ABBV-R36, >R49]. No AbbVie posting shows an openings field, so vacancy status is not recorded for any of the 13 and none has ambiguous vacancy status. A further 13 are enterprise roles, 6 are plant, quality or manufacturing roles, 1 is an internship and 22 are out of scope. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.

The T1 postings describe computational discovery roles in North Chicago: - in the Computational Drug Discovery (CDD) function, a Director to lead the computational HitGen/LeadGen team, developing methods for predicting binding affinities and pharmacological properties and "for rapidly sampling both enumerated and AI-generated chemical spaces" [>ABBV-R22] - in the same team, a Senior Scientist to develop and deploy computational hit-generation methods, with particular interest in assessing the synthetic tractability of designs from generative AI [>ABBV-R47] - in the Molecular Profiling and Drug Delivery (MPDD) function of the Synthetic Molecule CMC organisation, a Director to head a global computational chemistry team of 10 to 12 scientists and to co-create a strategy for "Computational Sciences and AI enabled drug discovery and development" [>ABBV-R24] - in MPDD, a Principal Research Scientist to apply physics-based methods and AI/ML to molecular design from lead optimisation through candidate selection [>ABBV-R25]

The two postings tagged both themes are in Biotherapeutics and Genetic Medicine (BGM), part of Discovery Research. A China AI/ML, Automation, and Capability Expansion Lead in Shanghai is to scout China-based AI/ML and automation partners for antibody design, protein engineering and discovery workflow automation [>ABBV-R36]. A Principal Data Architect in Worcester, reporting to the Head of AI/ML in BGM, is to own a cloud-native data platform "that connects laboratory data across dozens of assays" and supports machine learning development and deployment [>ABBV-R49].

The T2 postings describe lab data, lab automation and scientific computing roles: - in BGM in Worcester, two bioinformatics scientists to design digital data-capture workflows and dashboards for biologics discovery and to integrate lab instruments for data acquisition [>ABBV-R04, >R33] - in the Immunology Discovery pathology group in Worcester, an informatics scientist to develop automated image analysis workflows and to integrate imaging databases [>ABBV-R50] - in the Information Research organisation of Business Technology Solutions (BTS), North Chicago, a manager and a data engineer to deliver curated, AI-ready R&D data products within ARCH, AbbVie's R&D Convergence Hub, and its knowledge graph [>ABBV-R39, >R42], and an HPC Architect for Information Research's scientific computing environments [ABBV-R40] - in Information Research in South San Francisco, an engineer to implement technical solutions for R&D scientists, in a position the posting says involves "enabling digital transformation of our laboratories" [>ABBV-R43]

Two postings that rule set v0.4.2 counted in T2 are process development, so under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary they are out of scope and not counted: a senior automation engineer in Development Sciences, North Chicago, for laboratory automation in process development under "AbbVie's Labs of the Future" [>ABBV-R21], and a data scientist in Worcester preparing Product Development laboratory data and bioprocess models in a "Lab-in-the-Loop" environment, partly for Manufacturing Sciences [>ABBV-R23].

The Information Research roles show Corporate as their function, and are counted in T2 because their duties are R&D scientific data and computing systems [>ABBV-R39, R40, >R42, >R43]. The HPC role names no discovery activity, so it is not T1 (C42-21) [ABBV-R40].

An internship in Ludwigshafen on AI/ML computer vision for rodent video analytics, in Information Research, is outside the R&D count [>ABBV-R54]. Enterprise postings include an AI business systems analyst in the R&D-aligned technology team of BTS, a principal AI engineer for enterprise AI platforms and a semantic AI engineer for enterprise ontology services [>ABBV-R01, >R30, >R26]. Two procurement postings cover technology and AI: a Senior Director accountable for all Technology categories, "inclusive of AI and emerging platforms", and an Associate Director for AI and emerging technology categories; both are out of scope as procurement roles [>ABBV-R10, >R14]. A Ludwigshafen role applying AI/ML to formulation and process development is out of scope as R&D outside the themes [>ABBV-R19]. Clinical data and clinical AI roles outside a technology function are out of scope under C42-22 [>ABBV-R07, >R12, >R46].

Every AbbVie posting carries a date posted only in embedded page data, which may record a refresh, so posting dates are not reliable.

No LinkedIn company insights were collected for AbbVie.

Technology mentions in recruitment

Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 55 AbbVie mentions: 8 explicit use, 4 integration or environment, 6 required experience, 2 preferred experience, 1 planned implementation, 33 alternatives and 1 unclear. - Named as existing systems: ARCH, AbbVie's R&D Convergence Hub, within which the Information Research manager and data engineer are to deliver curated data products [>ABBV-R39, >R42]. Posit Workbench, Posit Connect and Posit Package Manager, which the HPC Architect is to help architect and support, and Slurm, which the role is to administer [ABBV-R40]. This is role-specific wording. - Two categories are recorded as explicit use because the posting states the employer's own system: Information Research's "on-premises, cloud, and hybrid HPC based scientific-computing environments" [ABBV-R40], and the BGM lab data platform whose architecture the data architect is to own [>ABBV-R49]. No product is named for either. - Integration responsibilities: the Labs of the Future engineer is to build solutions from instrument measurement to a data warehouse [>ABBV-R21]. The Lab-in-the-Loop data scientist is to prepare data "from source systems and data lakes" and to support ServiceNow access reviews [>ABBV-R23]. The BGM data architect is to align BGM data infrastructure with "broader AbbVie efforts such as Convergence and ARCH" [>ABBV-R49]. - Required experience: integration and automation of lab instrumentation for data acquisition [>ABBV-R04]; Apptainer/Singularity, AWS, Mellanox/NVIDIA InfiniBand, and NVIDIA GPUs and CUDA [ABBV-R40]; AWS [>ABBV-R50]. - Preferred experience: assay data collection "preferably using automated liquid handlers" [>ABBV-R33]; AWS [>ABBV-R43]. - Planned implementation: the Lab-in-the-Loop environment, stated as an objective [>ABBV-R23]. - Lists of examples: SnapGene, Geneious, Genedata Biologics, PipeBio and Benchling [>ABBV-R04]; Prism, Geneious, Genedata Screener, Dotmatics and Benchling, and Spotfire among visualisation tools [>ABBV-R33]; AVEVA PI, LIMS and ELN among biotech data systems, with KNIME, dbt, MLflow, Databricks, SIMCA and JMP [>ABBV-R23]; Ignition as an automation ecosystem [>ABBV-R21]; Databricks, Snowflake, Neo4j and Airflow [>ABBV-R42]; Airflow and Jira [>ABBV-R39]; Weka and Lustre [ABBV-R40]; AWS, Azure or GCP [>ABBV-R49]; Visiopharm, Halo and QuPath [>ABBV-R50]. - Unclear: producing "vector database-ready assets" [>ABBV-R42].

No ELN or LIMS product is named as in use in the R&D postings. LIMS and ELN appear only as categories in a list of preferred experience in the Product Development posting, which is now outside the R&D count [>ABBV-R23].

Deployment evidence

  • An Apheris results report of 14 September 2026, with AbbVie authors, says AbbVie, Astex, Bristol Myers Squibb, Johnson & Johnson and Takeda "each fine-tuned OpenFold3 Preview2 locally on their own structures", and that the federated model raised the share of high-quality predictions from 36% to 52% on a private benchmark [>ABBV-E05]. This is a model accuracy result reported for the network, not an AbbVie adoption or benefit metric. The AISB network page says the first initiative "is complete". No source states a scheduled end, so the completion is recorded as a milestone, not as a pause or cancellation [>ABBV-E05].
  • AbbVie completed the Nimble acquisition on 23 January 2025. Its global head of discovery research said AbbVie looks "forward to integrating this proprietary technology into our R&D capabilities" [>ABBV-E02]. We found no later statement that integration is complete.
  • A media newsletter of 13 February 2025 describes ARCH as using AI and ML "to centralize and connect data from more than 200 internal and external sources", and lists finding new drug targets among its uses [>ABBV-E16]. This is a media source. AbbVie's own ARCH pages were blocked, and no creation date was found. Postings first seen on 6 October 2026 describe curated data products within ARCH and publication to its knowledge graph [>ABBV-R39, >R42].
  • A copy of an AbbVie posting dated 2 September 2026 describes laboratory automation development and deployment in process development "as we continue developing AbbVie's Labs of the Future" [>ABBV-E17]. This is process development, recorded as context under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary. We found no evidence that the programme is complete.
  • Postings first seen on 6 October 2026 describe a BGM data platform whose architecture, adoption and continuous improvement the data architect is to own [>ABBV-E26], and state as an objective a "Lab-in-the-Loop" environment for end-to-end automation of laboratory data and modelling in Product Development [>ABBV-E18]. The Lab-in-the-Loop item is process development, recorded as context under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary. Their start dates are not stated.
  • An expired posting, first seen on 6 October 2026, describes an AI/ML lead in the Genomics Research Center heading a team of up to 10, to apply AI/ML across the pipeline, including target discovery [ABBV-E27]. It is not an open requisition.
  • An Allergan Aesthetics release of 14 July 2026 says SkinMedica is using AI and machine learning "to identify novel biological targets, accelerate ingredient discovery" [>ABBV-E11]. Its products are skincare, and whether this is drug discovery under the scope note is not settled. It is not counted either way.
  • We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.

Context

The OpenFold3 release of 27 March 2025 quotes John Karanicolas as Head of Computational Drug Discovery, AbbVie [>ABBV-E19]. The GEN report of 29 September 2026 quotes Athena Hadjixenofontos as director of data science and head of AI in biotherapeutics and genetic medicine at AbbVie [>ABBV-E23]. The AISB Bind release quotes Frank Oellien as Lead, Computational Drug Discovery, Emerging Modalities [>ABBV-E06]. The Iambic release quotes Nicholas Donoghoe, executive vice president and chief business and strategy officer, and Jonathon Sedgwick, senior vice president and global head of discovery research [>ABBV-E08]. We found no appointment or unit creation date for any of these roles.

Enterprise programmes: the Iambic and Valkai releases describe AI@AbbVie as "AbbVie's enterprise approach to using artificial intelligence (AI)", spanning R&D, operations and other functions; it states no discovery scope, so it is context under C42-9 [>ABBV-E10]. On 29 September 2026 AbbVie announced a partnership with Valkai under which "AbbVie will deploy purpose-built AI capabilities designed to improve efficiency across targeted areas of clinical research"; clinical development AI is context [>ABBV-E09]. AbbVie announced a $1.4 billion manufacturing campus in Durham, North Carolina, on 22 April 2026, and $380 million of API manufacturing facilities in North Chicago on 23 February 2026; each is to integrate manufacturing technologies with AI, and manufacturing labs are outside T2 [>ABBV-E12, >E13].

Data access, venture and other items: a Nashville Biosciences release of 5 March 2026 lists AbbVie as an existing member of the Alliance for Genomic Discovery, which is data access under AR7a [>ABBV-E20]. A BaseLaunch release of 16 December 2025 lists AbbVie as a partner of its biotech incubator, with no stated AI or computational discovery scope, so it is venture context under C42-4 [>ABBV-E21]. The Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance said on 8 May 2026 that its Living Lab patient registry is supported in part by AbbVie [>ABBV-E22].

STAT reported on 12 November 2025 that AbbVie is ending a decade-long ageing research partnership with Calico Life Sciences and laying off chemists working on discovering new drugs, as it moves away from small-molecule drugs [>ABBV-E25]. This is a media report, and we found no AbbVie confirmation. The report states no link to AI, computation or lab systems, so it is not a negative change in either theme.

We identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. Both reviewers ran a negative-event search for each theme. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.

Coverage limits

  • Complete families: the company press release archive, where both reviewers screened all 209 news.abbvie.com releases in the two windows; consortium and academic announcements; one web search per event type, complete through one reviewer; and the negative-event search for each theme.
  • Partial families, in all four theme and window cells: annual report or 10-K, results presentations and transcripts, partner newswires and the corporate venture arm.
  • www.abbvie.com blocked access, so AbbVie's story, science and AbbVie Ventures pages were not read, and abbvieventures.com did not resolve. investors.abbvie.com returned Access Denied, so results slides and call transcripts were not read; only results releases on news.abbvie.com were read.
  • No 10-K text supports any row. www.sec.gov refuses automated clients that do not declare contact details, which the network rules forbid. annualreports.com disallows its PDF and click-through paths in robots.txt, and copies one reviewer fetched from those paths were not relied on. A context row on enterprise AI use rests on that text and is not verified [>ABBV-E14]. A context row on employee AI skills rests on a generated summary of the 10-K and is not verified [>ABBV-E15].
  • Business Wire blocked access and GlobeNewswire did not respond. PR Newswire search reached only part of the windows. The Ginkgo investor site, Fierce Pharma, European Pharmaceutical Review, TipRanks, biotecnika and the IHI site also blocked access, and STAT and Endpoints are paywalled after the lead paragraph.
  • Each reviewer was limited to nine web searches. Searches not run for lack of budget: a site-restricted Business Wire and GlobeNewswire search for AbbVie AI partnerships, which neither reviewer ran, and one reviewer's ARCH dating search, which the other reviewer's capacity search partly covered. The adjudication notes list further searches for when budget allows: call transcripts mentioning AI in drug discovery, a robots-allowed copy of both 10-Ks and the AbbVie Ventures portfolio.
  • Rows drawn only from careers postings take 6 October 2026 as their first public date, because no AbbVie careers page shows a visible date-posted field [>ABBV-E18, >E26, E27]. The Labs of the Future row is dated from an aggregator copy that shows one [>ABBV-E17]. The ARCH first public date rests on a media newsletter, and an earlier company disclosure could not be checked [>ABBV-E16].
  • One media report that AbbVie uses Claude, drafted from a LinkedIn post, is excluded, because LinkedIn data are not used and no other source states the use [>ABBV-E24].
  • Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
  • Recruitment: both reviewers enumerated the 1,649 listings and title-screened them against a common term list. Postings whose titles did not match were screened only where one reviewer judged them relevant. Only the 55 requisitions classified are in the table.
  • Two independent reviewers searched AbbVie, and the final rows are their source-verified union. Both counted the same five changes, but that does not show that both did not miss the same events. The Lab-in-the-Loop row and the head of AI in BGM were found by one reviewer, and the BGM data platform and the Genomics Research Center team by the other [>ABBV-E18, >E23, >E26, E27].

Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)

  1. Lab data and lab automation roles sit in several units: BGM in Discovery Research, with workflow and data-capture roles, a lab data platform reporting to the Head of AI/ML in BGM and an automation scouting lead in Shanghai [>ABBV-R04, >R33, >R49, >R36, >E26]; Information Research in BTS, which delivers ARCH data products, scientific computing and lab digital transformation [>ABBV-R39, >R42, R40, >R43, >E16]; and, outside T2 as process development under the v0.4.3 boundary, Labs of the Future automation in Development Sciences [>ABBV-R21, >E17] and a Lab-in-the-Loop environment for Product Development labs in a posting under the Operations function [>ABBV-R23, >E18]. The BGM data architect is to align BGM data infrastructure with Convergence and ARCH, and the Labs of the Future engineer is to partner with the Development Sciences Digital Transformation team [>ABBV-R49, >R21]. What is the remit of each unit for lab data platforms and lab automation? Who decides on new lab data and automation systems, and how are the interfaces between the BGM platform, ARCH and the Development Sciences teams governed?
  2. AbbVie's T1 commitments include a joint collaboration to use Iambic's AI platform, an acquisition that brought a discovery platform, and three federated initiatives run by Apheris and Ginkgo Datapoints, in which AbbVie contributes data and members receive models [>ABBV-E08, >E01, >E03, >E06, >E07]. Internal computational discovery sits in CDD and in MPDD within Synthetic Molecule CMC [>ABBV-R22, >R47, >R24, >R25, >E19]. The Iambic release quotes the chief business and strategy officer and the global head of discovery research [>ABBV-E08], the BGM China lead is to coordinate with functions listed as "AI S&P, BD, S&E, TLC" [>ABBV-R36], and two procurement postings cover technology and AI categories [>ABBV-R10, >R14]. Who holds decision rights over joining a federated data consortium rather than licensing an external AI platform or building internally, and do these decisions pass through business development, the AI and emerging technology procurement category or discovery research? How is funding for them set, given that none of the three consortium releases discloses terms [>ABBV-E03, >E06, >E07]?
