Astellas

Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). The company scope is the whole Astellas Pharma group, including the Cellafa Bioscience joint venture, in which Astellas holds 60%, and Astellas Venture Management; nothing is excluded. Japanese-language pages were allowed, and Japanese quotes carry an English rendering in brackets marked as Ortent's translation. Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.

Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.

Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.

Summary

The reviewed sources identify no T2 commitment change involving Astellas in the year to 4 October 2025. The definitive agreement of 6 March 2025 with YASKAWA Electric to set up a joint venture, now Cellafa Bioscience, to develop a cell therapy manufacturing platform on the Maholo robot, with AI-optimised process development, counted in T2 under rule set v0.4.2. It is process development, so under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary it is recorded as manufacturing and process development context, not as a T2 commitment [>AST-E01]. In the year to 5 October 2026, the only commitment change identified is an AI-enabled Protein Station for research automation, which Astellas said at its R&D Day on 31 March 2026 it is introducing; it is tagged to both themes and has no stated decision or start date [>AST-E11]. By event date, we identified no T1 commitment change in either year in the searched sources; the Protein Station is the only T1 item, and it counts by first disclosure only. Astellas also describes an existing AI and robotics discovery platform, now called Human-in-the-Loop, first described in 2021 [>AST-E04, >E05]. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 3 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, 1 with ambiguous vacancy status [>AST-R01 to >R03]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Announced commitments

First public What was announced Terms disclosed Issued by First Astellas confirmation ID
6 Mar 2025 Process development context, not counted (v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary). Definitive agreement with YASKAWA Electric to establish a joint venture to develop a cell therapy product manufacturing platform using the dual-arm robot Maholo; its stated business includes to "Explore a manufacturing process with high precision and reproducibility using 'Maholo' and optimize the digitized manufacturing process with AI" and to develop manufacturing processes for partners' cell therapy candidates Capital JPY 4.5 billion; Astellas 60%, YASKAWA 40% Astellas (Astellas newsroom) Same release AST-E01
31 Mar 2026 R&D Day: Astellas aims to speed up biologics work "by introducing AI-enabled protein station for research automation"; the slide reads "AI-enabled Protein Station to Increase the speed and productivity of biologics discovery". No vendor is named None Astellas (R&D Day script) Same document AST-E11

Astellas published both items itself. The joint venture release on the Astellas newsroom carries Astellas-only boilerplate and no "X and Y today announced" wording, so it is recorded as company-published, not jointly issued [>AST-E01]. The Protein Station is described as being introduced, which records an announcement, not deployment (rule E4) [>AST-E11].

The joint venture release lists four business duties. Two are process development: exploring a manufacturing process with Maholo and optimising it with AI, and developing manufacturing processes for partners' cell therapy candidates [>AST-E01]. The other two, transferring the process to Maholo units at other manufacturing facilities to build a platform "that meets GMP conditions" and manufacturing investigational drugs "in GMP facilities", are GMP work [>AST-E01]. Rule set v0.4.2 counted the venture in T2 on its process development duties under rule AR7. The v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary, set by the principal review of 7 October 2026, places process development with manufacturing, so the venture is now context and is not counted [>AST-E01]. YASKAWA supplies the robot [>AST-E01]. The release says the parties signed a memorandum of agreement in May 2024, before both windows [>AST-E01].

Moving the venture to context took T2 in W0 from one to zero in both count views, and the two milestones below followed their parent to context; no other count changed [>AST-E01, >E02, >E03]. Later sources stress the manufacturing purpose. A Cellafa notice of 1 October 2025 says the venture was established on 29 September 2025 and "正式に事業を開始いたしました" [formally started business; Ortent's translation] on 1 October 2025 [>AST-E02]. It describes Cellafa as a company for "再生医療等製品の製造技術プラットフォームの開発とサービス提供" [the development of, and provision of services for, a manufacturing technology platform for regenerative medicine products; Ortent's translation] [>AST-E02]. On 18 December 2025 Astellas announced that the US FDA had granted an Advanced Manufacturing Technology designation for the Maholo Robotic Cell Culture Automation System, adding that Cellafa Bioscience "will drive the practical use of this technology" [>AST-E03]. In the same release Cellafa's chief executive says Cellafa "will establish a comprehensive manufacturing platform for cell therapies, encompassing process development and GMP manufacturing" [>AST-E03]. Both are recorded as context with their parent, and the platform is recorded as in build [>AST-E02, >E03].

Two earlier T1 commitments are kept for linkage and fall before both windows. An NVIDIA blog of 21 March 2023, quoting an Astellas executive, named Astellas among companies planning to use the Tokyo-1 supercomputer for molecular simulation and BioNeMo generative AI [>AST-E08]. On 3 September 2024 Somite Therapeutics announced a pre-seed extension joined by Astellas Venture Management; Somite states an AI platform, so the investment is a T1 commitment under C42-3 [>AST-E18].

By event date, we counted no T1 initiative with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025) or W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026). T2 is zero in both years; the Cellafa joint venture, counted in T2 in W0 under rule set v0.4.2, is now process development context [>AST-E01]. By first disclosure, T1 is zero in W0 and one in W1, and T2 is zero in W0 and one in W1. The W1 item in both themes is the Protein Station, which is tagged to both themes and so appears in each; its event date is unknown, so it counts only by first disclosure [>AST-E11]. Milestones disclosed number one in each theme in W0, the Human-in-the-Loop platform story, which is tagged to both themes, and none in W1 [>AST-E05]. Existing capabilities first disclosed number one in T1 in W0 [>AST-E20], and three in T1 and two in T2 in W1 [>AST-E06, >E12, >E19, >E10, >E14]. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes. We identified no qualifying theme-linked negative change in either year.

The opposite reading of borderline clarification C42-4 would change a count. If a company-run award programme counted as T1 when it backs an AI discovery company, the LabCentral Diamond Ticket to Quantum Sky (29 October 2024) and the 2025 Future Innovator Prize to DeepSeq.AI (21 May 2025) would be T1 commitments, and T1 in W0 would be two in both views [>AST-E24, >E23]. The opposite readings of C42-2 and C42-12 would change no count, because no Astellas row is an in-licensed AI-derived asset and no row concerns a separately listed subsidiary; Cellafa is an unlisted joint venture whose agreement Astellas announced itself [>AST-E01]. Read as a general statement of intent, the Protein Station would not count, and T1 and T2 in W1 by first disclosure would each be zero [>AST-E11].

Coverage is partial in all four theme and year cells. The partner newswire family is partial in every cell, and the annual report and filings family is partial in W1 and marked not comparable between the years. No comparison between the years is made.

Identified recruitment

On 6 October 2026 one reviewer enumerated 180 listings on the careers.astellas.com and astellascareers.jobs sitemaps, and the other 332 listings across those sitemaps and the ADP job feed, about 235 of them unique. A common title filter hit 2 listings for one reviewer and 4 listings (3 requisitions) for the other, and with postings added outside the filter 11 requisitions were classified from their duties. We observed 3 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class, 2 T1 and 1 T2, 1 with ambiguous vacancy status [>AST-R01 to >R03]. No posting is tagged to both themes. A further 3 are enterprise roles, 2 are plant, quality or manufacturing roles and 3 are R&D roles outside the two themes, classed out of scope under C42-20. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.

The posting with ambiguous vacancy status is the Computational Chemistry Lead in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was still in the astellascareers.jobs sitemap on 6 October, but the site's data feed marks it deleted at 16:56 UTC that day, and it was absent from the ADP feed, so whether it accepts applications is not established [>AST-R01].

The T1 postings describe computational and AI design roles in discovery: - a Computational Chemistry Lead in the Innovation Incubation Lab US category, for computational drug design of small molecules, to "Develop generative models, reinforcement learning pipelines, and predictive analytics for compound design and optimization" and to oversee computational chemistry work at CROs [>AST-R01] - a Scientist II, Antibody Engineering, in the Xyphos unit in South San Francisco, to drive biologics discovery in Oncology Research "by integrating antibody engineering, structural biology, and AI-enabled protein design", working with an AI/ML organisation and applying design-make-test-learn cycles through candidate selection [>AST-R02]

The T2 posting is a Senior Research Associate, Cytogenomics, at the Astellas Institute for Regenerative Medicine (AIRM) in Westborough, Massachusetts. It is a sequencing bench role with a stated duty to "Develop, execute, and maintain automated workflows using liquid handling platforms, including method programming" [>AST-R03]. Its classification is borderline. Read as an R&D role outside the themes under C42-20, it would leave the T2 split at zero and the R&D theme total at 2 [>AST-R03].

Enterprise postings in Bengaluru are an AI Foundation Platform lead on cloud, data and Copilot platforms, with no discovery duties (C42-21), a Copilot Studio developer and a data platforms operations expert for commercial and medical data [>AST-R04, >R05, >R06]. Two lab systems postings are in GMP quality control labs, at Sanford, North Carolina and Tralee, Ireland; rule AR7 excludes QC labs from T2 (C42-11) [>AST-R07, >R08]. The three out-of-scope roles are two AIRM gene-editing bench roles and an oncology external innovation scout, for whom computational degrader design is a scouting area, not a duty [>AST-R09, >R10, >R11].

Posting dates come from the ADP postingDate field or a site data feed field, which may record a repost or refresh, so they are not reliable.

No LinkedIn company insights were collected for Astellas.

Technology mentions in recruitment

Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 43 Astellas mentions: 11 explicit use, 6 integration or environment, 6 required experience, 2 preferred experience and 18 alternatives. - Named as existing systems in an R&D posting: Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing platforms, which the AIRM Senior Research Associate uses for sequencing workflows [>AST-R03]. This is role-specific wording. - Integration responsibilities: the antibody engineer is to "maintain accurate records in LIMS, ELN" and to apply AI/ML technologies "including AI-enabled SaaS platforms and autonomous AI agents" [>AST-R02]. The AIRM role works with liquid handling platforms, with no product named [>AST-R03]. - Required experience: machine learning and AI-driven platforms for compound prioritisation, generative design and predictive modelling, with no product named [>AST-R01]. - Lists of examples: Schrodinger, MOE, OpenEye, Rosetta, Pipeline Pilot, KNIME and Python [>AST-R01]; protein language models and structural modelling tools [>AST-R02].

No ELN or LIMS product is named in the R&D postings, and no category (ELN, LIMS, cloud) is recorded as explicit use. The other nine explicit-use mentions are on enterprise roles: Microsoft Azure, GCP, Databricks and Microsoft Copilot [>AST-R04], and Copilot Studio, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, Power Apps and Power Automate [>AST-R05]. Outside R&D, the Sanford QC labs posting requires experience of LabWare LIMS, Empower CDS and SDMS lab systems and prefers Databricks and Qlik [>AST-R07].

Deployment evidence

  • An Astellas story of 24 March 2021 describes a discovery cycle of "molecular design based on compound property prediction by AI, automated synthesis by AI and robots, automated biological testing", and says "Automated systems can be operated remotely" [>AST-E04]. This disclosure is from before both windows.
  • An Astellas story of 22 April 2025 says the Human-in-the-Loop platform is "widely used in small- and medium-molecule drug discovery within Astellas' R&D organization" [>AST-E05]. It says Astellas employees have "reduced the time needed to refine an initial compound (a hit compound) into a viable drug candidate by approximately 70%", and quotes a research head: "We have reached a point where an AI-designed, predicted and robot-synthesized compound is advancing to clinical trial" [>AST-E05]. The date of that advance is not stated.
  • The Integrated Report 2025 says "Our application of AI has expanded beyond small molecule drug discovery into new modalities", including protein degraders and antibody design [>AST-E06]. It says that through Tokyo-1, a platform provided by Mitsui & Co. with NVIDIA, "Astellas has already confirmed substantial improvements in computational speed across multiple projects and has successfully developed proprietary AI models" [>AST-E09]. It says "we are building and enhancing dedicated in-house databases for each modality", and that deployment "of robotic technology to our overseas and joint research facilities is progressing" [>AST-E10]. It says "We started using Maholo in our drug discovery research in 2017" [>AST-E14].
  • At the R&D Day on 31 March 2026, Astellas referred to "NVIDIA's AI-powered supercomputing for small molecule drug design that has already been implemented" [>AST-E12]. The source does not name Tokyo-1, so the two are recorded separately [>AST-E09, >E12].
  • A GamesBeat article of 15 July 2026, whose text is credited to NVIDIA, says "Astellas has deployed nearly all BioNeMo NIM microservices within NVIDIA's digital biology portfolio and is running BioNeMo Agent Toolkit" [>AST-E19]. This is a media source, and we found no Astellas confirmation.
  • An undated Astellas drug discovery capabilities page describes Mahol-A-Ba as "An experimental system that combines a robot, an operating system for experiment equipment, and AI to enable remote, automated cell-culture and assessment" [>AST-E13]. The R&D Day slides describe Mahol-A-Ba as a robotics platform "automating complex cell therapy manufacturing processes", so its scope is mixed [>AST-E13].
  • A BiopharmaTrend article of 16 July 2025 lists Astellas among more than 20 pharmaceutical partners of the AI discovery company Elix [>AST-E20]. A partner list does not establish deployment or a commitment (C42-18), and the scope of any Astellas work is not stated.
  • The Integrated Report 2025 has no printed publication date. Its first-public date is the PDF creation date, 31 October 2025, which places these disclosures in W1 although the report covers FY2024, so that date is uncertain [>AST-E06, >E10, >E14].
  • The 70% figure and the computational speed statement are company-reported and were not checked against other sources [>AST-E05, >E09]. Beyond them, we found no adoption or benefit metric for these items in the reviewed sources.

Context

On 29 September 2025 Astellas announced that from 1 October 2025 "the position of CDTO will be removed from Top Management, with both Digital and Transformation functions being integrated into the Strategy function" [>AST-E21]. The source links the change to no discovery or lab remit, so it is governance context, not a theme negative (C42-7) [>AST-E21]. The Integrated Report 2025 says Astellas launched the DigitalX insourcing initiative in late 2024 to move core digital capabilities into the organisation [>AST-E30].

Enterprise and clinical AI: the CSP2026 plan of 26 May 2026 aims to "Embed AI and data-driven insights across R&D to enable better decisions and higher productivity", but names no discovery system, so it is context under C42-9 [>AST-E27]. On its FY2024 results call Astellas attributed company-wide cost optimisation of about JPY 6 billion year on year mainly to "the use of digital and AI tools" [>AST-E28]. An undated Open WebUI customer story describes an internal generative AI platform on Azure built in about a month in April and May 2025, enabling "3,000+ employees" to create and share models [>AST-E29]. At the R&D Day Astellas said Evinova's AI-native study designer "will enable us to efficiently design more sophisticated patient-centric clinical trials", which is clinical development context [>AST-E16]. Its statement that "AI-driven gene therapy will lead to precise organ targeting" names no system or resource and is recorded as context [>AST-E15].

Under C42-4, five startup programmes are context, not T1 commitments, because none states AI or computational discovery scope: - the sixth Astellas Future Innovator Prize with MBC BioLabs, announced on 27 February 2025, and its winners DeepSeq.AI and Serna Bio, named on 21 May 2025; the prize is lab space and Astellas expertise [>AST-E22, >E23] - a LabCentral Diamond Ticket, a USD 500,000 lab space credit, presented with Astellas to Quantum Sky on 29 October 2024 [>AST-E24] - memoranda of understanding with Mitsubishi Research Institute (MEDISO) on 13 June 2025 and with Korea's KISED on 17 July 2025 to support drug discovery startups [>AST-E25, >E26]

Venture: Astellas Venture Management's news page lists rounds for Solu Therapeutics (9 April 2025), Sidewinder Therapeutics (8 April 2026) and Restore Vision (15 April 2026); none states an AI platform, so all are context under C42-3 [>AST-E31, >E32, >E33]. Its portfolio page lists Cellular Intelligence, "AI driven cell therapy", under new portfolio since 2020, with no investment date; a dated investment in W0 or W1 would be a T1 commitment, and the search to date it was not run [>AST-E17]. A Chemspeed article of 18 August 2026 retells the Human-in-the-Loop story; it makes no claim that Astellas uses Chemspeed systems and is excluded [>AST-E07].

We identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. Both reviewers ran a negative-event search for each theme. The results were the CDTO change, licence terminations with no AI link, and media reports of a gene therapy production plant closure in South San Francisco and stem cell site closures in Seattle, which are manufacturing or site items with no theme link in what was read; the two media pages blocked access. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.

Coverage limits

  • Search families complete for both themes in both years: the company press release archive, results presentations and transcripts (including the R&D Day and CSP2026 materials), consortium announcements, academic collaborations, the venture arm and the negative-event searches. The one-search-per-event-type family is complete through one reviewer; the other did not run its open-release search. The annual report and filings family is complete in W0 and partial in W1, and the partner newswire family is partial in every cell.
  • Searches not run, for lack of search budget: site-restricted Business Wire and GlobeNewswire searches for Astellas AI drug discovery releases (both reviewers); a search to date the Cellular Intelligence investment [>AST-E17]; a search for the 2026 launch of Cellafa research support services, which bears on the venture's lifecycle [>AST-E01]; and one reviewer's open model or dataset release search.
  • Business Wire and GlobeNewswire are known blocks and were not attempted. Fierce Pharma and Fierce Biotech blocked access to the plant and site closure reports. BioSpectrum Asia blocked one reviewer's access to a report of an Insilico Medicine collaboration, and HPCwire disallows ClaudeBot; the other reviewer's copy dates that collaboration to 4 May 2020, before both windows, and no row was made. IHI blocked access, xeureka.jp reset the connection, and a newswire mirror and a jobs aggregator failed.
  • Annual reports: Integrated Report 2026 was not published by 6 October 2026. The FY2025 annual securities report could not be text-extracted, because the extractor lacked Japanese character data, and the Japanese Integrated Report 2025 lost its Japanese text; no row rests on either. The Integrated Report 2025 first-public date is uncertain and is not settled by a rule [>AST-E06, >E10, >E14, >E30].
  • Undated pages have no first-public date and are excluded from the first-disclosure counts [>AST-E13, >E17, >E29].
  • Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
  • Recruitment: the Japan recruitment site (re-jp.astellas.com) failed TLS verification, so Japan roles were not screened. One reviewer could not read the ADP feed, and the Computational Chemistry Lead page is script-rendered, so its duties come from the site data feed [>AST-R01]. Only the 11 requisitions classified are in the table.
  • Two independent reviewers searched Astellas, and the final rows are their source-verified union. That union contains rows that each reviewer missed, but it does not show that both did not miss the same events. The Tokyo-1 blog, the BioNeMo article and the Somite investment were found by one reviewer, and the 2021 story, the Maholo research use and the Elix list by the other [>AST-E08, >E19, >E18, >E04, >E14, >E20].

Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)

  1. Robotic lab systems and lab data appear in several places. Cellafa, 60% Astellas, is to develop a Maholo process platform with AI and offer platform access to startups and academia; this is process development, recorded as context under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary [>AST-E01, >E02, >E03]. Astellas began using Maholo in drug discovery research in 2017, and the Integrated Report says the joint venture discussions were led by the Technology & Manufacturing team engaged in CMC development [>AST-E14]. Separately, Mahol-A-Ba is described for automated cell culture and assessment [>AST-E13], research robotics are being rolled out to overseas and joint research facilities alongside in-house modality databases [>AST-E10], the Protein Station is being introduced for biologics research automation [>AST-E11], and an AIRM role programmes liquid handlers [>AST-R03]. What is the remit of Cellafa, Technology & Manufacturing and the research units for lab robotics and lab data? Who decides on new robotic and data systems for the research sites, and does Astellas research procure Maholo-based capability through Cellafa or separately?
  2. AI discovery capability rests on internal platforms and external arrangements: the Human-in-the-Loop platform [>AST-E04, >E05], Tokyo-1 participation and NVIDIA supercomputing [>AST-E08, >E09, >E12], a media report of BioNeMo use [>AST-E19] and an Elix partner listing [>AST-E20]. A computational chemistry lead is to evaluate and onboard CROs for computational chemistry work [>AST-R01]. On 1 October 2025 the CDTO role was removed and Digital and Transformation moved into the Strategy function, after DigitalX began insourcing digital capabilities [>AST-E21, >E30]. Who holds decision rights over AI discovery platforms, compute and computational CROs: the research units, DigitalX or the Strategy function? How is funding for them set under the CSP2026 aim to embed AI across R&D [>AST-E27]?
