AstraZeneca
Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.
Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.
Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.
Summary
The reviewed sources identify five AI-discovery initiatives with a new or expanded AstraZeneca commitment in the year to 5 October 2026, and three in the year before [>AZ-E03, >E04, >E07, >E10, >E14, >E15, >E18, >E20]. AstraZeneca opened its Kendall Square R&D centre on 5 October 2026 and described its laboratories as integrating robotics, continuous automation and agentic AI [>AZ-E19]. We identified no qualifying lab digitalisation commitment in either year in the searched sources. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 12 classified R&D requisitions across the two themes [AZ-R01 to >R04, >R06, >R08, >R09, >R12, >R15 to >R18]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Three items were AstraZeneca releases [>AZ-E03, >E07, >E15]. Three were partner releases quoting an AstraZeneca executive, and the 2025 annual report later names each of those partnerships [>AZ-E04, >E10, >E14]. The two consortium releases carry no AstraZeneca quote, and we found no AstraZeneca confirmation of either in the reviewed sources [>AZ-E18, >E20].
The January 2026 CSPC agreement is recorded as an expansion of the June 2025 CSPC collaboration, so CSPC appears once in each year [>AZ-E07, >E15]. LIGAND-AI started on 1 November 2025 according to its project factsheet; 20 January 2026 is the first public mention found [>AZ-E20].
By event date, Ortent's counts table shows three T1 initiatives with a qualifying change in the year to 4 October 2025 and five in the year to 5 October 2026. By first disclosure the T1 figures are the same, three and five. For T2 both views show none in either year. No event date in these counts is uncertain, and no negative change was recorded. The Kendall Square opening is counted as a milestone in both themes, not as a change [>AZ-E19].
Every searched cell for AstraZeneca is rated partial and not comparable between the two years. The press-release listing could not be enumerated, and no full-year annual report yet covers the latest year. No comparison between the two years is made.
Identified recruitment
Reviewers screened 204 archived AstraZeneca careers pages by title and read the candidates (reviewer notes B/g1). We classified 46 requisitions from their duties. Of these, 12 are R&D roles in the two themes [AZ-R01 to >R04, >R06, >R08, >R09, >R12, >R15 to >R18]. Split by theme they are 6 T1 and 8 T2, because two roles are tagged to both themes and counted once in each [>AZ-R03, >R08]. A further ten are enterprise data and AI roles, including four title-only cloud, AI and data engineering roles in the Evinova clinical-trial technology business, a borderline classification [>AZ-R28 to >R36]. Three are plant or manufacturing roles, four are internships or graduate roles, and 17 are out of scope, including clinical development AI, computational pathology and four process development roles [>AZ-R05, >R07, >R10, R11, R13, R14, >R19 to >R27, >R37 to >R45]. Three of the out-of-scope roles are noted as R&D roles outside the themes [>AZ-R40 to >R42]. One internship, a master's thesis on deep learning for histology staining, carries a T2 tag but is not counted as an R&D role [>AZ-R45]. These are open requisitions on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.
The R&D postings name roles in several groups: - AI for discovery: an associate director for AI engineering for discovery in Barcelona [AZ-R01], an AI for new target discovery role in Cambridge, Massachusetts [AZ-R02], translational data science on single-cell and spatial omics in immunology [>AZ-R06], and digital proteomics with agentic AI for neoantigen discovery in the Centre for Genomics Research [>AZ-R08] - biologics: computational biologics design in Cambridge, UK [>AZ-R04], an agentic AI engineer building systems that biologics scientists rely on and pipelines to the company's high-throughput and automated lab platforms [>AZ-R03], and high-throughput antibody production on integrated robotics [>AZ-R12] - data platforms: a data engineering lead in the Drug Discovery Data Platform team [>AZ-R09], and a translational data enablement director leading a 12 to 15 person team of data stewards and engineers [>AZ-R18] - biobank and lab IT: a biobank automation technician in Gaithersburg commissioning aliquoting and automated freezer storage for human samples handled under Good Clinical Practice [>AZ-R15], and in Chennai, biobank and LIMS application support [AZ-R16] and a Digital Lab cloud engineer [AZ-R17]
Five of these classifications are recorded as borderline in the table, including the biobank technician, which rule set v0.4.2 moved into theme 2 as a regulated R&D lab role [>AZ-R06, >R15 to >R18].
Four postings that were T2 roles under rule set v0.4.2 are process development roles and are out of scope under the v0.4.3 boundary: a lead AI and data engineer for the R&D IT APD platform, which digitises chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC) development labs [>AZ-R10]; a laboratory automation scientist in Chemical Development, Macclesfield, whose posting names a "Lab of the Future programme" [AZ-R11]; and a mechatronics engineer and an orchestration software engineer in Alexion Product Development and Clinical Supply in New Haven [AZ-R13, R14]. Posting dates shown run from 13 September to 1 October 2026, but they may be refresh dates, and two requisition numbers are well below their peers [>AZ-R08, R14].
LinkedIn Premium company insights, read through an Ortent account on 6 October 2026, show Research openings up 1% over six months and total headcount up 3% over a year (aggregate LinkedIn member data). These are generic function figures. They do not measure AI or lab-automation hiring and are context only.
Technology mentions in recruitment
Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. - Named as the employer's own stack or environment: the agentic AI engineer posting states "Our stack includes Claude Code, Claude Cowork, GitHub Copilot, M365 Copilot, and HuggingFace", with deployment on AZ infrastructure including AWS, Kubernetes and Domino [>AZ-R03]. The Drug Discovery Data Platform posting describes "our AWS data and analytics ecosystem" and lists Snowflake, Starburst, Redshift, dbt and Power BI among others, followed by "Equivalent technologies are equally relevant" [>AZ-R09]. The antibody production role operates Hamilton and Lynx systems with Cellario orchestration software [>AZ-R12]. The biobank IT role names MuleSoft, Snowflake and PostgreSQL [AZ-R16], and the Digital Lab cloud role builds Terraform, CloudFormation and CDK modules on AWS [AZ-R17]. - Categories classed as explicit use because the wording states the employer's own system: GPU compute, in a posting that refers to "AZ's sovereign AI compute platform built on NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD" without naming the platform [>AZ-R03], and LIMS, in "our Biobank and LIMS ecosystem", with no LIMS product named [AZ-R16]. This is role-specific wording. It does not show scale, spend or company-wide use. - Integration responsibilities: the antibody production role tracks samples in "laboratory logistics/LIMS software" [>AZ-R12], and the mechatronics role, a process development role, builds PLC control interfaces [AZ-R13]. No product is named. The biobank automation technician posting, a borderline T2 role, supports integration of laboratory equipment into "technology solutions such as LIMS" [>AZ-R15]. - Preferred or required experience: the orchestration software role prefers experience integrating with ELN, LIMS and SDMS systems [AZ-R14]. The APD platform role lists Snowflake, Starburst, AWS Glue, LangChain and LangGraph among desirable technologies [>AZ-R10]. Both are process development roles, outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3. The AI engineering role requires experience with GitHub and GitHub Actions [AZ-R01]. - Lists of examples: Schrodinger or Rosetta for structural modelling [>AZ-R04]; PyTorch or TensorFlow, scGPT, and GitHub Copilot or Claude Code [>AZ-R06]; AWS, GCP or Azure [AZ-R01]; and AI coding tools including Claude and Cursor [AZ-R17].
Deployment evidence
- AstraZeneca's 2025 annual report says over 90% of its small molecule discovery pipeline is AI-enabled, with similar approaches applied to other areas including biologics [>SRC-AZ-ARPIPE]. A company web page prepared in August 2026 repeats the figure [>SRC-AZ-WEBPIPE]. This is a company-defined share of the portfolio. It does not measure the use of any tool or a benefit.
- The same report says REINVENT, its small molecule discovery platform, "now enables significant time savings". No metric is given [>SRC-AZ-ARREINV].
- The report says redesigned genomics algorithms cut CO2 emissions and compute time by 99.8% "compared to global standards" [>SRC-AZ-ARCGR]. A 2026 sustainability publication gives a reduction of more than 99% against "current industry standards" [>SRC-AZ-SIPCGR]. The comparator is an external benchmark, not an AstraZeneca baseline, and no measurement period is stated.
- The report says AstraZeneca is developing an ecosystem of foundation models and AI agentic frameworks for drug discovery. This describes work in progress, not completion [>SRC-AZ-ARFM].
- The Kendall Square centre opened on 5 October 2026 with ten floors of laboratories that integrate robotics, continuous automation and agentic AI [>AZ-E19]. The site was first announced in 2022. The release gives no adoption or use metric for the automation.
- The March 2025 release says the Beijing centre will be enabled by a new AI and data science laboratory [>AZ-E03]. We found no evidence in the reviewed sources that the laboratory is operating.
- We found no adoption or benefit metric measured against an AstraZeneca baseline for these capabilities in the reviewed sources.
Context
AstraZeneca created a dedicated Enterprise AI unit in December 2025 [>AZ-E11]. The 2025 annual report says the unit will deliver a single data foundation and accelerate high-value AI initiatives [>SRC-AZ-ARDATA]. AstraZeneca executives quoted in the releases above include Jim Weatherall, Chief Data Scientist, Biopharmaceuticals R&D [>AZ-E10], and Slave Petrovski, vice president, Centre for Genomics Research [>AZ-E14]. Jorge Reis-Filho of the Enterprise AI unit is quoted in a clinical AI release [>AZ-E12].
Rene Haas, chief executive of Arm, became a non-executive director on 1 January 2025, with the board citing his data science, computing and AI expertise. He stepped down on 30 April 2026 [>AZ-E01, >E02]. AstraZeneca co-founded Sferical AI, launched in August 2025 to operate a sovereign AI supercomputer, and holds 20.00% of its holding company [AZ-E05, >E06]. Its sources do not tie the compute to AstraZeneca discovery, so it is recorded as context.
The 2025 annual report records a $171 million charge within R&D expense covering severance and the transformation of clinical, regulatory and other R&D data and systems; the two parts are not separated [>SRC-AZ-ARRESTR]. It also describes the Axial programme, in which the enterprise is adopting the S4HANA platform, with scope expanded to more sites [>SRC-AZ-ARAXIAL].
Several AI deals in the events table are outside the two themes and recorded as context. They are the Modella AI agreement of July 2025 and its acquisition in Q4 2025, both scoped to oncology clinical development [>AZ-E08, >E13]; a BostonGene collaboration in January 2026 [>AZ-E12]; an Immunai expansion worth up to $37.5 million through 2027 [>AZ-E16]; and an Owkin K Pro licence for competitive intelligence agents in May 2026 [>AZ-E17].
Media reported in September 2025, with a spokesperson confirming, that AstraZeneca had paused a planned GBP 200 million expansion of its Cambridge, UK research site [>AZ-E21]. Its source does not link the pause to AI in discovery or lab digitalisation, and we identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.
Coverage limits
- The astrazeneca.com press-release listing is rendered by script and could not be enumerated, so the newsroom was covered only through individual releases and searches. Every searched cell is rated partial.
- SEC EDGAR refused automated access, and archived 6-K copies are block pages.
- No FY2026 annual report exists yet. The latest year rests on the FY2025 annual report, of which only October to December 2025 falls in that year, plus results announcements and the January 2026 investor presentation. One reviewer did not review the Q1 2026 results, and Q3 2026 results were not yet published.
- One reviewer did not review the FY2024, Q1, H1 and nine-month 2025 results materials for the earlier year.
- The searched-source lists include no results-call transcripts.
- Patents were not counted, because Google Patents was blocked. Preprint servers were not searched. Publication counts are raw query counts.
- revvitysignals.com, tempus.com and fiercebiotech.com blocked access. The Tempus release was read through a BioSpace copy [>AZ-E04]. A vendor case study on an AstraZeneca electronic lab notebook is in the tables but not verified, because its archived copy is a block page; it is not used in this brief [>AZ-E09].
- Requisitions are a screened set from 204 archived pages, not a census, and technology mentions were extracted only for the kept requisitions. The archived AstraZeneca postings show no openings field, so vacancy status is not recorded and no opening counts are given.
- The publication timestamp of the 2025 annual report is not established, so dates taken from it are uncertain [>AZ-E11].
Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)
- The 2025 annual report says the Enterprise AI unit, created in December 2025, will deliver a single data foundation [>AZ-E11; A:AZ-C22]. Current R&D postings describe a Drug Discovery Data Platform team with its own AWS data environment [>AZ-R09], an R&D IT platform digitising CMC development labs [>AZ-R10], a Lab of the Future programme in chemical development [AZ-R11] (both process development, outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3) and a biobank and LIMS ecosystem [AZ-R16]. What is the remit of the single data foundation relative to these R&D platforms? Who holds decision rights over additions to them, and how are the interfaces between lab systems and these platforms governed?
- Five of the eight commitments were announced by partners or consortia, and the two consortium memberships carry no AstraZeneca quote or confirmation in the reviewed sources [>AZ-E04, >E10, >E14, >E18, >E20]. Which function decides on joining external AI-discovery collaborations and consortia, and what are its interfaces with the Enterprise AI unit and the Centre for Genomics Research [>AZ-E14, >R08]? How are external discovery tools evaluated and bought, and how is funding for them committed alongside the 2025 charge for R&D data and systems transformation [B:AZ-C206]?
