Biogen

Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2), across the whole of Biogen; the cohort scope note places no part of the company out of scope. Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.

Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.

Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.

Summary

The reviewed sources identify one AI-discovery commitment involving Biogen: it joined the OpenFold AI research consortium on 13 August 2024, before both windows [>BIIB-E01]. We identified no qualifying commitment change in either theme, in the year to 5 October 2026 or in the year before, in the searched sources. The sources also describe open-source molecular alignment tools released by Biogen medicinal chemists, an industry partner listing in the Open Free Energy project and a computational design function named in a job posting; none is counted as a change [>BIIB-E03, >E14, >E27, >E26]. We identified no relevant R&D requisition posting in either theme among the 16 postings classified from the 6 October recruitment snapshot [>BIIB-R01 to >R16]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Announced commitments

We identified no qualifying commitment change in T1 or T2 in either window in the searched sources. That is a search result, not a statement that Biogen made no such commitment. The only row in the tables that counts as a change is OpenFold membership: an OpenFold release of 13 August 2024 names Biogen among six new industry members of the non-profit consortium, which develops free and open-source software tools for biology and drug discovery [>BIIB-E01]. It predates W0, so it counts in neither window. We found no Biogen release on it, and no later OpenFold output naming Biogen was checked [>BIIB-E01].

Five partner items in the windows were screened and excluded, because their sources state no AI or computational discovery work for Biogen under the deal: the Neomorph molecular glue collaboration (29 October 2024), a C4 Therapeutics IND acceptance under a 2018 collaboration (4 September 2025), the Vanqua Bio in-licence (24 October 2025), the Dayra Therapeutics collaboration (24 November 2025) and the Alloy Therapeutics ASO platform licence (7 April 2026) [>BIIB-E02, >E12, >E15, >E16, >E19]. The Dayra release states that "Biogen and Dayra will collaborate to identify, validate and optimize oral macrocycle candidates for high-priority immunological targets", for a $50 million upfront [>BIIB-E16]. Computation appears only in the paragraph describing Dayra, which "combines its macrocycle discovery platform with computational design and modeling" [>BIIB-E16]. The adjudicator treated that as a statement about the partner, not the deal, and recorded the row as exclude (C42-2 with AR6 and AR7a). That call is borderline and awaits confirmation.

By event date, we counted no T1 initiative with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025) and none in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026). By first disclosure, the T1 count is also zero in both years. T2 is zero in both views and both years. One T1 milestone was disclosed in W1: an Open Free Energy post on a cross-company benchmarking study, in which Biogen's part rests on a Biogen-affiliated author of the resulting paper [>BIIB-E17]. Existing T1 capabilities first disclosed numbered two in W0, the two ROSHAMBO papers [>BIIB-E03, >E14], and two in W1, the Alloy mouse platform use and the computational design function [>BIIB-E20, >E26]. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes. The Open Free Energy partner listing is undated and falls in neither window [>BIIB-E27]. Under the opposite reading of borderline clarification C42-2, accepting Dayra's description of its own platform as the computational connection, T1 W1 would be 0 by event date and 1 by first disclosure, with the event date uncertain, and every other cell would be unchanged [>BIIB-E16]. The event date is uncertain because the release is dated 24 November 2025 but says the upfront was included in guidance given on 30 October 2025, and the recorded date interval spans the 5 October 2025 boundary [>BIIB-E16].

Coverage is partial for both themes in both years. The consortium, academic, venture-arm and negative-event search families are complete in all four cells. The annual report family is complete for W1 only, and the press release archive, results material and partner newswire families are partial in every cell. The per-event-type web searches are partial for T1 capacity and for T2 partnership, acquisition and venture. The coverage table marks the press release archive, annual report and results material families as not comparable between the years, so no comparison between the years is made.

Identified recruitment

On 6 October 2026 the Biogen Workday careers site listed 253 requisitions, enumerated by both reviewers. A common title filter hit the same 11 requisitions for each reviewer, and the reviewers added further roles to screen, giving 16 classified postings in all. We identified no relevant requisition posting in the R&D theme class among the 16, so the R&D theme count is zero, with T1 0 and T2 0. Of the 16, 4 are enterprise roles, 4 are plant, quality or manufacturing roles, 1 is an internship and 7 are out of scope. Vacancy status is not recorded for any posting, because no Biogen posting shows an openings field. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.

The two R&D postings classified are lab roles with no AI or lab-systems duties, noted as outside the themes: - a Director, Biotherapeutics Discovery, in San Francisco, to lead wet-lab biologics discovery campaigns [>BIIB-R16]. The posting lists computational design among the functions the role partners with, and "Familiarity with computational design or AI/ML applications in biologics discovery" among its qualifications [>BIIB-R16, >E26] - a Sr. Scientist, Biologics Engineering, in the BioDesign group in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for wet-lab antibody and protein engineering, who is to document work in electronic lab notebooks [>BIIB-R15]

The four enterprise postings are an AI adoption and change management specialist for AI initiatives, Planisware enhancements and workflow automation in Project and Portfolio Management and the Development Asset Leads organisation [>BIIB-R06]; an associate director for data engineering and architecture in Enterprise Application Services [>BIIB-R12]; an IT solution architect for identity and access management [>BIIB-R11]; and an IT data integration lead in commercial IT [>BIIB-R14]. The AI adoption role names no discovery activity, so it is an enterprise role under C42-21 [>BIIB-R06].

Out of scope are four US Commercial predictive analytics, AI and marketing measurement roles [>BIIB-R04, >R05, >R08, >R09], and a head of data stewardship and AI-ready data engineering for clinical development, which leads "a newly expanded organization" and is out of scope under C42-22 [>BIIB-R13, >E25]. The plant postings are automation engineering roles at Research Triangle Park manufacturing sites [>BIIB-R02, >R03, >R07, >R10]. The internship is a machine learning engineering co-op on a digital health team [>BIIB-R01].

Posting dates come from a startDate field in the Workday job data; the pages show only a relative posted date, and the field may record a repost, so the dates are not reliable.

No LinkedIn company insights were collected for Biogen.

Technology mentions in recruitment

Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 30 Biogen mentions: 11 explicit use, 1 integration or environment, 7 required experience, 2 preferred experience, 3 planned implementation and 6 alternatives. None is in an R&D theme posting. - Named as existing systems: DeltaV and Syncade MES in the manufacturing automation postings [>BIIB-R02, >R07, >R10]; Planisware, whose enhancements the AI adoption role is to support [>BIIB-R06]; Snowflake, for which the enterprise data architect is to maintain roadmaps [>BIIB-R12]; and Snowflake, Databricks, Veeva CRM and Salesforce Marketing Cloud, named as part of "our commercial technology ecosystem" [>BIIB-R14]. This is role-specific wording. - Integration responsibilities: the BioDesign scientist is to document work in electronic lab notebooks, with no product named [>BIIB-R15]. - Required experience: Databricks and Snowflake in the commercial analytics postings [>BIIB-R04, >R05, >R08], and Snowflake in the clinical data posting [>BIIB-R13]. - Preferred experience: Databricks and Informatica [>BIIB-R12]. - Planned implementation: SailPoint Identity Security Cloud and ServiceNow for identity governance [>BIIB-R11], and adoption of Snowflake Cortex AI capabilities in the clinical data organisation [>BIIB-R13]. - Lists of examples: LabWare LIMS among systems a manufacturing role integrates with [>BIIB-R02]; LIMS in similar manufacturing lists [>BIIB-R07, >R10]; Microsoft Copilot [>BIIB-R06]; Informatica [>BIIB-R14]; Python [>BIIB-R01].

No ELN or LIMS product is named in the R&D postings, and no category (ELN, LIMS, cloud) is recorded as explicit use.

Deployment evidence

  • Two papers by authors in Biogen Medicinal Chemistry, one with an Acellera co-author, released ROSHAMBO, an open-source package for molecular alignment and 3D similarity calculations "optimized for large-scale virtual screening of small molecules", and ROSHAMBO2, a GPU-optimised version available under the MIT licence [>BIIB-E03, >E14]. The papers were first published on 30 October 2024 and 24 September 2025. The repository dates are not established, and we found no company announcement, so these are recorded as existing capabilities.
  • An Alloy Therapeutics release of 7 April 2026 says the new licence "builds on past work together, including Biogen's use of Alloy's AI-enabled transgenic mouse platform" [>BIIB-E20]. This is a partner release; the Biogen quote in it concerns the new ASO licence, and the date of the earlier use is not stated.
  • The Open Free Energy About page lists Biogen among its industry partners. The page is undated, so the date Biogen joined is not established [>BIIB-E27]. An Open Free Energy post of 19 December 2025 announced "the first study to report binding free energy benchmarks on a cross-company collection of proprietary datasets" [>BIIB-E17]. The post names no partners, and Biogen's part rests on a Biogen-affiliated author of the paper.
  • A discovery leadership posting, whose Workday start date is 28 September 2026, names computational design among the functions the role partners with [>BIIB-E26, >R16]. One function name is a weak signal of capability.
  • We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.

Context

Enterprise and governance: Biogen's 2024 Corporate Responsibility Report says "We have worked to develop a responsible AI strategy" [>BIIB-E08]. The 2025 report says Biogen has implemented risk-based enterprise-wide governance for how AI is designed, deployed, monitored and used, and that it launched foundational AI training for leadership teams with Northeastern University [>BIIB-E21, >E23]. The FY2025 Form 10-K says AI-based software is used in the industry, "including by us, for research, marketing, manufacturing and commercialization"; it states no discovery scope, so it is enterprise context under C42-9 [>BIIB-E18]. The report dates rest on PDF creation dates, not established publication dates [>BIIB-E08, >E21].

Clinical and commercial AI: on the Q3 2024 call Biogen's development head described "using AI to help optimize clinical trial participation and site selection" [>BIIB-E04]. The 2025 report says AI-enabled medical record review helped sites identify eligible lupus trial participants [>BIIB-E22]. An undated R&D expertise page lists AI with the potential to accelerate drug development under the Development organisation [>BIIB-E28]. On the Q4 2024 call the CEO said AI and genetic testing help find rare disease patients [>BIIB-E06]. Veeva announced on 25 August 2026 that Biogen has committed to Veeva Vault CRM globally [>BIIB-E24]. A Biogen Research paper of 17 July 2025 released ScaleSC, a GPU-accelerated single-cell data processing package; no discovery use is stated, so it is context [>BIIB-E10].

Sites, manufacturing and deals: Biogen announced on 24 March 2025 a new Cambridge headquarters, scheduled to open in 2028 under a 15-year lease of about 580,000 square feet, that "will feature laboratories of the future"; no lab digitalisation is stated, so it is site context [>BIIB-E07]. A $2 billion investment at Research Triangle Park announced on 21 July 2025 includes modernising manufacturing "through further advanced automation and artificial intelligence", which is outside both themes [>BIIB-E11]. Biogen announced on 18 September 2025 that it will acquire Alcyone Therapeutics for $85 million upfront plus milestones; AI and computational modelling are stated for drug transport and dosing, which is development, not discovery [>BIIB-E13]. The City Therapeutics deal of 27 May 2025 includes a $30 million convertible note in an RNAi company with no stated AI or computational platform, so it is venture context under C42-3 [>BIIB-E09].

A Biogen spokesperson confirmed to BioSpace on 23 January 2025 that Biogen would lay off an undisclosed number of research unit employees [>BIIB-E05]. The source names no AI, computational, lab automation or data systems team, so it is workforce context. We identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. Both reviewers ran a negative-event search for each theme. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.

Coverage limits

  • Biogen's investor site, investors.biogen.com, blocked access (Akamai Access Denied), and its year filter was ignored, so the 2024 and 2025 release listings could not be enumerated. Biogen releases were read from StockTitan and BioSpace copies, and StockTitan itself returned 403 after about 40 requests. Any Biogen-hosted items not copied there were missed.
  • Biogen's careers site, careers.biogen.com, was blocked: the egress proxy rejected the connection. Requisitions were read from the Biogen Workday site linked from biogen.com/careers.
  • sec.gov blocked access. The FY2025 Form 10-K was read in full from a StockTitan copy. The FY2024 10-K was reached only as a generated summary, which is not counted evidence, so the W0 annual report family is partial.
  • Results slides were not retrieved. The Q1 2025 call transcript was not found, and the page for the Q3 2025 transcript served another company's transcript. Not every quarterly results release was reached.
  • Business Wire and GlobeNewswire blocked access, and PR Newswire search renders only in the browser. Partner releases were read through BioSpace and Silicon UK copies, so some first-public dates are copy display dates [>BIIB-E19, >E20]. Endpoints News disallows Claude agents in robots.txt, and Becker's Hospital Review, TipRanks and MarketScreener blocked access.
  • Search budget: each reviewer ran nine web searches. These searches were not run: a T1 capacity search for compute or AI platforms, T2 partnership, acquisition and venture searches for lab automation, ELN, LIMS or scientific data, a vendor and partner release search (for example Schrodinger, NVIDIA or AWS), a dated Open Free Energy join, OpenFold outputs naming Biogen, UK Biobank proteomics membership, the date of the Alloy mouse platform use and the ROSHAMBO repository owner.
  • The Open Free Energy partner listing and the R&D expertise page are undated, so their first-public dates are blank [>BIIB-E27, >E28]. Rows drawn from job postings take a startDate field as their first public date, with the basis marked uncertain [>BIIB-E25, >E26].
  • Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
  • Recruitment: both reviewers enumerated the 253 Workday listings and title-screened them with a common filter. Only the 16 postings classified are in the table.
  • Two independent reviewers searched Biogen, and the final rows are their source-verified union. That union contains rows that each reviewer missed, but it does not show that both did not miss the same events. The Open Free Energy rows were found by one reviewer, and the Alloy mouse platform use and the computational design function by the other [>BIIB-E17, >E27, >E20, >E26].

Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)

  1. Biogen's computational discovery activity appears in several forms: membership of the OpenFold consortium and an industry partner listing in Open Free Energy [>BIIB-E01, >E27, >E17], open-source alignment tools released by its medicinal chemists [>BIIB-E03, >E14], past use of a partner's AI-enabled mouse platform [>BIIB-E20], and a computational design function in biologics research [>BIIB-E26, >R16]. Its Head of Research is quoted on the Dayra platform collaboration [>BIIB-E16]. Which unit holds the remit and budget for computational discovery tools and consortium memberships? Who decides whether to join an open-source consortium, build tools in-house or license a partner's discovery platform, and how is funding for those choices set?
  2. Data and AI roles in the snapshot sit in enterprise, commercial and clinical functions: an enterprise data architect in Enterprise Application Services [>BIIB-R12], an AI adoption role for portfolio management [>BIIB-R06] and a clinical data organisation that partners with R&D IT and is to adopt Snowflake Cortex AI capabilities [>BIIB-R13, >E25]. Biogen reports enterprise-wide AI governance [>BIIB-E21]. One research posting mentions electronic lab notebooks with no product named [>BIIB-R15]. What remit do Enterprise Application Services, R&D IT and the AI governance function each have over research lab data and scientific systems? Who holds decision rights over lab data and ELN systems in research, and does procurement of such software pass through enterprise IT or the research organisation?
