Gilead Sciences

Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Company scope is Gilead Sciences as a whole, including Kite, so Kite releases and postings are counted with Gilead's. Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.

Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.

Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.

Summary

The reviewed sources identify one AI-discovery collaboration commitment involving Gilead first disclosed in the year to 4 October 2025, with Terray, and none in the year to 5 October 2026 [>GILD-E02]. They identify one company lab digitalisation commitment (T2) first disclosed in the year to 4 October 2025: a new Research Center at Gilead's headquarters, described as digitally enabled labs [>GILD-E04]. The Research Center opened on 8 September 2026 [>GILD-E05]. The New Technical Development Center (NTDC), also at headquarters, is process development: under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary it is recorded as manufacturing and process development context, not as a T2 commitment [>GILD-E06]. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 5 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, none with ambiguous vacancy status [>GILD-R02, >R09, >R43, >R45, >R48]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Announced commitments

First public What was announced Terms disclosed Issued by First Gilead confirmation ID
17 Dec 2024 Strategic collaboration under which Terray will use its tNova platform, which "combines high-throughput chemical experimentation and computational analysis with a generative AI-driven drug discovery engine", to discover small molecules against targets selected by Gilead; Gilead holds an option to exclusively license the compounds directed to a target Upfront payment, amount not disclosed; milestones and tiered royalties; expected to reduce 2024 EPS by about $0.01 Gilead and Terray (joint release, gilead.com copy), Gilead executive quoted Same release; restated in the FY2024 results release, 11 Feb 2025 GILD-E02
29 Aug 2025 Gilead story on a new Research Center under construction at its headquarters, to house oncology and inflammation research and billed as one of the most digitally enabled labs in the country: "Everything from autonomous robots to augmented reality and digital twins will be part of the center" 182,000 square feet; completion stated for 2026; no spend stated Gilead (company story) Same story GILD-E04
3 Sep 2025 Process development context, not counted (v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary). Groundbreaking of the Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing Technical Development Center (NTDC), a hub for technical development and manufacturing teams "Designed with flexible pilot lab space and advanced digital infrastructure"; "It will feature digitally enabled systems, autonomous robotics, and real-time digital monitoring" Five-story, 180,000 square feet; part of the $32 billion US investment plan; no separate spend stated Gilead Same release GILD-E06

Gilead published both building items itself [>GILD-E04, >E06]. The Terray release was issued jointly and quotes Gilead's Executive Vice President, Research [>GILD-E02]. The NTDC release of 3 September 2025 also refers to "a new research building designed to accelerate scientific discovery, already under construction" [>GILD-E04, >E06]. We found no Terray milestone, expansion or ending in the searched sources [>GILD-E02].

Gilead and Genesis Therapeutics jointly announced on 10 September 2024, before both windows, a collaboration that will deploy Genesis's GEMS AI platform to generate and optimise molecules for Gilead-selected targets, with $35 million upfront across three targets [>GILD-E01]. It is recorded as the parent for any later Genesis activity. We found no Genesis action in either window, so it adds nothing to the counts.

By event date, we counted one T1 initiative with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025), Terray, and none in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026). By first disclosure, the T1 count is also one in W0 and none in W1. In T2 we counted no initiative by event date in either year. By first disclosure, T2 is one in W0, the Research Center, and none in W1. The Research Center's commitment date is not stated, so it counts only by first disclosure and is listed as event date uncertain. A photo captioned "New Research Center Groundbreaking Ceremony" in the 2024 Responsible Business and Impact Report (PDF created 22 April 2025) shows that the groundbreaking came before that date [>GILD-E04]. One T2 milestone was disclosed in W1, the Research Center opening [>GILD-E05]. Existing capabilities first disclosed in W1 numbered two in T1 and one in T2 [>GILD-E07, >E10, >E09]. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes. We identified no qualifying negative change in either theme in the searched sources.

The NTDC is process development. The release headline calls the site a manufacturing hub, and the facility is planned as a hub for technical development and manufacturing teams, with pilot labs and technology transfer. Under rule set v0.4.2 it was counted in T2. The v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary, set by the principal review of 7 October 2026, places process development, pilot labs and technical development centres with manufacturing, so the NTDC is now recorded as context and is not counted [>GILD-E06]. This moved T2 W0 from one to zero by event date and from two to one by first disclosure. One reviewer classed the Research Center item as an existing capability, not a commitment; under that reading T2 W0 by first disclosure would be zero [>GILD-E04]. The opposite readings of borderline clarifications C42-2, C42-4 and C42-12 would change no commitment count: no screened in-licensing, option or acquisition states AI-derived discovery, no Gilead or Kite accelerator or challenge was found, and Kite is wholly owned and in scope.

Coverage is partial for both themes in both years. Six of the nine source families were completed on the review checklist. The annual report or 10-K, results presentation and transcript, and partner newswire families are partial, and the coverage table marks the newswire family as not comparable between the years, because the PR Newswire index reached back only to 13 October 2025. No comparison between the years is made.

Identified recruitment

On 6 October 2026 both reviewers enumerated 789 postings on four Gilead Workday careers sites, with 537 unique requisition numbers. Both title filters hit the same 52 postings, and each reviewer added postings outside the filter; the table classifies 60 postings from their duties. We observed 5 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class, 2 T1 and 3 T2; no posting is tagged to both themes [>GILD-R02, >R09, >R43, >R45, >R48]. No Gilead or Kite posting shows an openings field, so vacancy status is not recorded for any of the 5 and none has ambiguous vacancy status. A further 31 are enterprise roles, 17 are internships, 6 are out of scope and 1 is a manufacturing role. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.

The T1 postings describe AI roles in research: - a Senior Scientist, AI/ML (Biologics Design), in California, to develop machine learning approaches for biologics discovery and lead optimisation, including protein language models and generative methods, and to "Contribute to the scientific direction of AI-enabled biologics design within Research Data Sciences" [>GILD-R02] - an AI Data Science Lead for Research (Gilead and Kite) in Raleigh, North Carolina, part of Gilead's enterprise AI strategy and reporting to the Director, Data & AI (Research), to lead AI/ML use cases "including pathological image processing, target identification and biomarker discovery" [>GILD-R09]

The T2 postings describe lab automation and research data roles: - a Staff Software Engineer, Research Systems, in Research Informatics, California, to build scientific software and data solutions supporting drug discovery, maintain existing Research Informatics platforms, support research cloud environments and evaluate platforms and vendor solutions [>GILD-R45] - an Automation Engineer in the Protein Therapeutics Department, California, to design and build laboratory automation workcells for biologics discovery, provide integration support for instruments, scheduling software and laboratory information management systems, and work with IT and Research Informatics on structured data capture [>GILD-R48] - a Kite Research scientist for in vivo high-throughput screening and analytics in Philadelphia, to develop automated liquid-handling workflows, data capture and data pipelines for lentiviral vector research [>GILD-R43] Two analytical development postings that rule set v0.4.2 counted in T2 are process development under the v0.4.3 boundary, so they are now out of scope and not counted: a Kite scientist for method automation in Analytical Development, Santa Monica, translating manual methods into automated and PAT-enabled analytical workflows ready for QC transfer [>GILD-R11], and a data scientist in the Advanced Analytical Technologies team of Analytical Development, California, building machine learning and computer vision applications to improve development and manufacturing processes across Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing [>GILD-R34].

One of the three T2 postings is a Kite role [>GILD-R43]. With Kite excluded, the R&D count would be 4, with T2 at 2.

Seventeen internship postings are outside the R&D count. Eight are tagged T1, among them Research AI internships in Data Sciences, Protein Therapeutics, Discovery Sciences and Technologies, and Medicinal Chemistry and Structural Biology [>GILD-R27, >R28, >R31, >R35, >R36, >R56, >R58, >R59]. One, an AI internship for DMPK and LC-MS scientific data, is tagged T2 [>GILD-R55]. Enterprise postings include IT Data and AI product owners for Research, PDM and Tech Ops and Clinical Development [>GILD-R05, >R06, >R42], a Data and AI delivery lead for Clinical Development [>GILD-R07], delivery leads for the enterprise Data and AI platform [>GILD-R10, >R23], an applied AI leader in the clinical AI Research Center [>GILD-R49] and regulatory AI capability leads [>GILD-R46, >R47].

Three classifications are borderline. A computational pathology scientist in Research Pathobiology, whose imaging biomarker work is not placed in target identification, validation or candidate selection, is an enterprise role under C42-8 and C42-21; counted as T1, it would make the T1 split 3 [>GILD-R44]. The Research data and AI product owner, whose duties name no discovery activity, is an enterprise role under C42-21; counted as T1, it would add one more [>GILD-R05]. A Discovery Sciences and Technologies leader for assay and screening work is out of scope under C42-20; counted as T2, it would make the T2 split 4 [>GILD-R03].

Technology mentions in recruitment

Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 83 Gilead mentions: 20 explicit use, 8 integration or environment, 3 required experience, 1 preferred experience, 49 alternatives and 2 unclear. - Named as existing systems in R&D postings: only a category, the "existing Research Informatics platforms and applications" that the research systems engineer is to maintain; no product is named [>GILD-R45]. It is recorded as explicit use because the posting states the employer's own platforms. - Named as existing systems outside R&D: enterprise postings describe platform capabilities "built on AWS and Databricks" and delivery on AWS and Databricks [>GILD-R10, >R23, >R07, >R38, >R12]; an IT data engineering posting names AWS services, Apache Airflow and Databricks [>GILD-R18]; a data and AI solutions posting in Japan names Microsoft Copilot and Tableau [>GILD-R17]; a finance IT internship names "the team's approved platform stack (Databricks, AWS, Claude/GenAI tooling)" [>GILD-R37]; and a manufacturing posting names DeltaV-based process equipment automation [>GILD-R24]. This is role-specific wording. - Integration responsibilities: the Protein Therapeutics automation engineer is to support automation platforms, laboratory instruments, scheduling software and laboratory information management systems, with no product named [>GILD-R48]. Three enterprise product owners are to influence "Databricks, AWS, and data platform evolution" [>GILD-R05, >R06, >R21]. The manufacturing automation head is to integrate DeltaV with MES, LIMS and other plant systems [>GILD-R24]. - Required experience: Python [>GILD-R02, >R34] and Databricks [>GILD-R16]. - Preferred experience: HPC job submission for de novo protein design, in a T1 internship [>GILD-R35]. - Lists of examples: PyTorch or JAX and AlphaFold-class models [>GILD-R02]; Hamilton, TECAN, Biomek and Integra [>GILD-R11]; Tecan EVO/Fluent, Hamilton STAR, Beckman Biomek, CyBio FeliX, Opentrons, HighRes, BioSero Green Button Go and Agilent Velocity11, and JMP, Prism and Spotfire for data reduction [>GILD-R43]; AWS as a cloud research environment [>GILD-R45]; ELN, LIMS and HPC among scientific platforms [>GILD-R05]; Rosetta, MOE and Schrodinger [>GILD-R35]; Visiopharm [>GILD-R44]; Claude Code, GitHub Copilot and OpenAI Codex [>GILD-R18, >R55, >R58]. - Unclear: LIMS and ELN in the Kite method automation role, which contributes to integration evaluations but does not say it uses or works with a system [>GILD-R11].

No ELN or LIMS product is named in the R&D postings, and no ELN, LIMS or cloud category is recorded as explicit use.

Deployment evidence

  • Gilead's release of 8 September 2026 says the company "today celebrated the opening" of the Research Center, which will support about 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, with "shared technology platforms" [>GILD-E05]. The release does not restate the autonomous robots, augmented reality or digital twins described in the 2025 story, so their use is not established [>GILD-E04].
  • The same release says the Technical Development Center, recorded as process development context under the v0.4.3 boundary, is expected to open in 2027 [>GILD-E05, >E06]. A manufacturing posting describes "the biologics Pilot Plant within the New Technical Development Center (NTDC)", for which the role is to own DeltaV process automation through design, startup and operation [>GILD-R24].
  • The opening release quotes Gilead's Executive Vice President, Research, on "expanding our data science capabilities", saying "we are strengthening the infrastructure needed to accelerate discovery" [>GILD-E07]. A posting first seen on 6 October 2026 places AI-enabled biologics design within Research Data Sciences [>GILD-E08, >R02]. Neither states when the function was created.
  • A posting dated 15 September 2026 from its page label refers to existing Research Informatics platforms and research cloud environments for drug discovery data [>GILD-E09, >R45]. A job-board copy of a Gilead posting, originally posted 5 June 2026, describes a portfolio of Research AI/ML use cases across Gilead and Kite, including target identification [>GILD-E10, >R09]. Their start dates are not stated.
  • We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.

Context

Flavius Martin, Executive Vice President, Research, is quoted in the Genesis and Terray releases and at the Research Center opening [>GILD-E01, >E02, >E07]. Stacey Ma, Executive Vice President, Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing, spoke at the NTDC groundbreaking [>GILD-E06]. We identified no AI leadership appointment in either theme in the searched sources.

On 7 May 2025 Gilead set out a US investment plan of $32 billion through 2030 to expand manufacturing and R&D capabilities; its newly announced $11 billion includes "$2 billion invested in digital and advanced engineering initiatives" [>GILD-E03]. The statement does not tie that sum to R&D labs or scientific data systems, and it names neither the Research Center nor the NTDC, so it is context and is not their parent.

Enterprise programmes: Gilead's 2025 Responsible Business and Impact Report, published on 21 April 2026, says "Employees companywide now have access to Gilead-specific AI tools that help contextualize pharmaceutical research, streamline administrative tasks and accelerate scientific discovery", and that Gilead is piloting its own AI agent [>GILD-E11]. The 2024 report says "In February 2025, Gilead's Enterprise Data Science Council published our AI Principles" [>GILD-E13]. A posting first seen on 6 October 2026 describes an enterprise AI strategy in which an IT product owner leads AI and data product strategy across Research and Translation Sciences [>GILD-E12, >R05]. These are context under C42-9, because no source states discovery scope or deployment into R&D lab or scientific data systems.

Clinical AI: a posting dated 23 September 2026 from its page label describes an AI Research Center (ARC) within Clinical Data Science in Drug Development [>GILD-E14, >R49]. It states that business ownership of priorities, requirements and funding stays with the Clinical Data Science and Development functions, and that platform services stay with Enterprise IT and Development Systems [>GILD-R49]. This is clinical development AI, so it is context.

Data access: a DeciBio newsletter of 11 May 2026 reports that Tempus expanded a real-world data collaboration with Gilead for oncology R&D, and that "The expansion gives Gilead access to Tempus' AI-driven Lens technology" [>GILD-E15]. The Tempus release was unreachable, so this rests on a media copy, and it is context under AR7a.

We identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. The negative-event searches surfaced media items on a Seattle R&D support site closure, job cuts at the California headquarters, a biologics development team move and Kite office closures, but no reached text ties any of them to either theme, and the Fierce items were blocked. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.

Coverage limits

  • Searches completed on the review checklist: the company release archive, consortium, academic, venture, one-search-per-event-type and negative-event families. Partial: the annual report or 10-K, results presentations and transcripts, and partner newswire families. Each reviewer had a capped budget of nine web searches.
  • Searches not run because the search budget ran out: a Genesis and Terray milestone or expansion search; a dating search for the Research Center building announcement, which another reviewer's search covered without finding a date [>GILD-E04]; and a search for Kite machine learning, computational or AI collaborations as written, which a partnership search covered in part. Four other listed searches were run only in combined form.
  • The investors.gilead.com site returned a Cloudflare challenge, so results slides, webcasts and transcripts were not read. Results press releases were read on gilead.com.
  • No 10-K was read for either year. SEC EDGAR requires contact details in the user agent, which the network rules forbid, and annualreports.com disallows the PDF path in robots.txt. The 2024 and 2025 Responsible Business and Impact Reports were read instead.
  • Business Wire blocked access and GlobeNewswire refused connections. Gilead's Business Wire releases were read as copies on gilead.com. The PR Newswire keyword index reached back only to 13 October 2025, so W0 newswire coverage is thinner than W1. The Terray and Genesis sites reset the connection, so the partner copies were not checked.
  • Fierce Biotech and Fierce Pharma blocked access, so three negative-search results were unread, and an adjudicator re-check was blocked again. The tempus.com site returned 429, and investors.tempus.com, Nasdaq and GenomeWeb blocked access, so the Tempus item rests on a newsletter [>GILD-E15]. ihi.europa.eu, pharmaceutical-technology.com, xtalks.com, bioworld.com and americanpharmaceuticalreview.com also blocked access. A Benchling case study page returned 410 and was not read. The genengnews.com and trial.medpath.com sites disallow AI agents in robots.txt.
  • Posting dates: a page label with an exact day count was read as a date posted, while postings showing only "Posted 30+ Days Ago" take the first observed date, 6 October 2026 [>GILD-E08, >E12]. The adjudicator recorded this reading of C42-17 as not settled. Read as falling inside W1, T1 existing capabilities first disclosed in W1 would be three [>GILD-E08]. No change count is affected.
  • Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
  • Recruitment: only the 60 postings classified are in the table.
  • Two independent reviewers searched Gilead, and the final rows are their source-verified union. That union contains rows that each reviewer missed, but it does not show that both did not miss the same events. The Research Data Sciences release row and the clinical AI Research Center were found by one reviewer, and the AI biologics design posting, the Research Data & AI posting copy and the Tempus item by the other [>GILD-E07, >E14, >E08, >E10, >E15].

Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)

  1. Lab automation and research data roles sit in several units: Research Informatics, which maintains existing platforms and research cloud environments and evaluates vendor solutions [>GILD-R45, >E09]; laboratory automation in the Protein Therapeutics Department, which integrates instruments, scheduling software and laboratory information management systems and works with IT and Research Informatics on structured data capture [>GILD-R48]; and Kite Research screening automation in Philadelphia [>GILD-R43]. Analytical development automation and data science at Kite and in Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing sit outside T2 as process development under the v0.4.3 boundary [>GILD-R11, >R34]. The Research Center opening release describes shared technology platforms; the NTDC, also process development context, is planned with digitally enabled systems and autonomous robotics [>GILD-E05, >E04, >E06]. What is the remit of Research Informatics relative to departmental automation teams and Kite? Who decides on lab automation, scheduling and LIMS or ELN selections in these labs, and how is funding for this work set, including whether any of the $2 billion stated for digital and advanced engineering initiatives applies to it [>GILD-E03]?
  2. Gilead's stated AI-discovery collaborations are with external platforms, Terray and, before the windows, Genesis [>GILD-E02, >E01]. Internally, Research Data Sciences has an AI-enabled biologics design remit [>GILD-E07, >E08, >R02], while an AI Data Science Lead for Research (Gilead and Kite) and a Research data and AI product owner sit in the IT Data and AI organisation under the enterprise AI strategy [>GILD-E10, >R09, >E12, >R05]. An Enterprise Data Science Council published Gilead's AI Principles [>GILD-E13], and the clinical AI Research Center posting states that business functions own priorities and funding while Enterprise IT owns platform services [>GILD-R49]. Who holds decision rights over licensing an external AI discovery platform rather than building in Research Data Sciences, and is ownership of priorities, funding and platforms split between Research and IT in a similar way? Which route do such agreements take, for example Research, business development or IT procurement?
