GSK
Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.
Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.
Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.
Summary
The reviewed sources identify three AI-discovery collaboration commitments involving GSK first disclosed in the year to 5 October 2026, and two in the year before [>GSK-E05, >E06, >E14, >E16, >E28]. GSK annual reports describe AI, computational design and automation platforms for small molecules, oligonucleotides and antibodies, with no stated start dates [>GSK-E09, >E19, >E20]. We identified no commitment change in company lab digitalisation (T2) in either year in the searched sources. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 5 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, none with ambiguous vacancy status [>GSK-R03 to >R07]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

GSK published two of these five items itself [>GSK-E05, >E14]. The other three were announced first by the partner, with a GSK executive quoted in two [>GSK-E06, >E16]. GSK confirmed the 2024 Relation deal in its Annual Report 2024 and the Noetik licence in its FY2025 results slides. We found no GSK confirmation of the 2026 Relation expansion [>GSK-E28]. The Annual Report 2024 date shown is its Board approval date, not an established publication date [>GSK-E06].
The Teichmann collaboration has no stated start date, and the article says it builds on earlier collaborations. 12 December 2025 is the earliest public mention found, so it counts as first disclosed this year. It is not counted as a change known to have happened this year [>GSK-E14].
GSK pledged £45 million in May 2024, before both windows, as a founding partner of the Fleming Initiative on antimicrobial resistance, with funds available for approved projects using new technology including AI [>GSK-E01]. On 18 November 2025 GSK and the Fleming Initiative announced six programmes funded from that pledge, which "will begin by early 2026"; one is to create an AI/ML model to help design antibiotics [>GSK-E02]. No new money was stated, so the 2025 announcement is recorded as a milestone, not as a commitment change.
By event date, we counted two T1 initiatives with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025), CG-TIC and Relation, and two in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026), Noetik and the Relation expansion. By first disclosure, the T1 count is two in W0 and three in W1, adding Teichmann. Relation counts in both years. T2 is zero in both views and both years. Two T1 milestones were disclosed in W1 [>GSK-E02, >E29]. Existing capabilities first disclosed numbered one in each theme in W0 [>GSK-E09], and four in T1 and one in T2 in W1 [>GSK-E19, >E21, >E25, >E30]. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes.
The W0 search was complete for every event type on the review checklist. The W1 search was partial for every event type except publications, because neither reviewer located the Q2 2026 results transcript. The coverage table marks every event-type cell as not comparable between the years, so no comparison is made.
Four deals that the reviewers first placed in T2 are recorded as context under rule AR7a (see Context).
Identified recruitment
On 6 October 2026 the GSK careers sitemaps listed 684 job URLs by one reviewer's count and 688 job IDs by the other's. We classified 54 postings from their duties. We observed 5 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class (2 T1, 3 T2), none with ambiguous vacancy status [>GSK-R03 to >R07]. A further 12 are internships or graduate placements, 11 are enterprise roles, 8 are plant, quality or manufacturing roles and 18 are out of scope. Four of the out-of-scope postings are R&D lab roles with no AI or lab-systems duties, noted as outside the themes [>GSK-R37, >R47 to >R49]. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.
Two AI for Science postings were R&D theme roles under rule set v0.4.1. Their duties name scientific tasks and biomedical data but no discovery activity, so under rule set v0.4.2 they are enterprise roles [>GSK-R01, >R02]. Both were listed on jobs.gsk.com on 6 October but show zero openings in the page data, so whether they accept applications is not established. Across all 54 classified postings, 14 show zero openings.
The T1 postings describe modelling roles in discovery: - a ViiV Healthcare scientific leader for pre-clinical DMPK drug discovery modelling, to apply PBPK, IVIVE and PK/PD models from target validation to candidate selection and build "scalable computational tools" [>GSK-R06] - an associate director for QSP modelling in DMPK, to influence target prioritisation and to explore combining QSP with computational groups in human genetics, functional genomics and AI/ML [>GSK-R07]
The two modelling roles are mechanistic modelling, counted as computation applied to discovery [>GSK-R06, >R07].
The T2 postings describe lab systems and lab data roles: - a Senior Director, CMC and Lab Specialization, in R&D Digital & Tech, employed in the Global Tech Organisation. The posting describes a Labs and CMC Tech function across 17 global sites and 5,000 scientists, and the role is to set a 3 to 5 year roadmap for lab and data transformation focused on vaccines and specialised sciences [>GSK-R03] - a Lab Robotics Manager in Cambridge, Massachusetts, accountable for the design, deployment and lifecycle management of lab robotics systems for "the Scientific Area, Vx CL&AP, and DDS laboratories" [>GSK-R04] - a Lab Data Manager in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to deliver scientific data management solutions for R&D, support MyLabData users and set the archiving strategy for electronic lab data [>GSK-R05]
Three internship or placement postings are tagged to the themes but are outside the R&D count: two in T2 (lab systems and automation in Siena, and Stevenage biological sciences placements that include automation in target validation and biomarker labs) and one in T1 (a computational sciences placement) [>GSK-R09, >R11, >R14]. A chemistry placement posting, tagged T2 under rule set v0.4.2 for its analytical development automation role, is process development (CMC) work and carries no theme under the v0.4.3 boundary [>GSK-R13]. The biological sciences posting also includes an analytical automation placement in the same analytical development department; its T2 tag rests on the other placements [>GSK-R11]. All four show zero openings. Enterprise postings include a Senior Director for Data, AI and Infrastructure Procurement in London [>GSK-R20] and two compliance AI roles [>GSK-R27, >R28]. The two AI for Science postings are an AIML engineer in the AI for Science (AI4S) team, to develop AI models and agentic systems for scientific tasks using high-performance computing and GSK biomedical data [>GSK-R01], and an AIML software engineer in the same team, to build and operate the cloud infrastructure and model serving that its AI systems and agentic applications run on [>GSK-R02].
Posting dates come from a field in the page data that may record a refresh, so they are not reliable.
No LinkedIn company insights were collected for GSK.
Technology mentions in recruitment
Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 50 GSK mentions: 7 explicit use, 5 integration or environment, 3 required experience, 3 preferred experience, 31 alternatives and 1 unclear. - Named as existing systems: Google Cloud Platform and five of its services (Cloud Run, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Storage, Artifact Registry and Cloud SQL), described in the AI4S software engineer posting as "the services we build on" [>GSK-R02]. This posting is an enterprise role under rule set v0.4.2 and has ambiguous vacancy status. MyLabData, whose users the Lab Data Manager is to train and whose new releases they are to test; the posting does not say whether it is in-house or vendor software [>GSK-R05]. - Integration responsibilities: the AI4S engineer works with high-performance computing and "the vast biomedical data sources available at GSK" [>GSK-R01]. The Lab Robotics Manager is accountable for "a broad range of lab robotics systems". No product is named [>GSK-R04]. Placement postings refer to automated liquid handlers, electronic laboratory notebooks and "our machine learning platforms and models that we are developing on site" [>GSK-R11, >R13, >R14]. - Required experience: Python [>GSK-R01, >R02] and SQL databases [>GSK-R02]. - Preferred experience: large language models and agentic AI [>GSK-R01, >R07], and manufacturing execution systems [>GSK-R03]. - Lists of examples: PyTorch, JAX or TensorFlow [>GSK-R01, >R02]; GCP or Azure [>GSK-R02]; Hamilton, Tecan and Eppendorf as examples of liquid handling equipment [>GSK-R04]; lab informatics, LIMS or ELN implementation experience [>GSK-R03]; Simcyp, GastroPlus and Phoenix WinNonLin [>GSK-R06]; MATLAB, SimBiology, Julia, Python and C/C++ [>GSK-R07]. - Unclear: the lab transformation role is to use AI/ML "to optimize scientific workflows" [>GSK-R03].
No category (ELN, LIMS, cloud) is recorded as explicit use for GSK, and no ELN or LIMS product is named in the R&D postings.
Deployment evidence
- Noetik reported on 26 August 2026 that it had met the first near-term milestone under the licence. The release states that "GSK's teams are using OCTO-VC to perform virtual cell experiments, investigate patient stratification, and enrich their H&E data with multi-modal predictions" [>GSK-E29]. This is a partner release quoting GSK's Chief AI Officer. The date the milestone was met is not stated.
- The 2024 Annual Report says GSK is building a digital chemistry platform that uses AI/ML and automation for small-molecule discovery [>GSK-E09]. The 2025 report describes the platform in the present tense, and says its generative design system "will rapidly create chemical compounds" [>GSK-E09].
- The 2025 Annual Report names Oligopolis, an "AI-powered, end-to-end oligonucleotide platform" that incorporates the Elsie platform acquired in 2024 and automates design, synthesis and testing cycles [>GSK-E19]. Its start date is not stated.
- The 2025 Annual Report says GSK's antibody platforms integrate computational protein modelling "with an end-to-end automated lab-in-the-loop platform" [>GSK-E20]. The 2023 Form 20-F already described generative antibody design realised with highly automated synthesis, isolation and purification, so this disclosure dates from before both windows.
- The 2025 Annual Report says "the integration of GenAI and agentic AI into our discovery process significantly enhances our ability to identify genetically validated targets" [>GSK-E21].
- A Q2 2026 investor slide lists a "Chai2 AI system" under platforms in a non-exhaustive list of business development since 2023. The slide names no counterparty, date or terms, and we found no announcement [>GSK-E25].
- Annual-report dates rest on Board approval or PDF creation dates. Their publication timestamps are not established, so their first-public dates are marked uncertain [>GSK-E09, >E19, >E20, >E21].
- We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.
Context
Christopher Austin was appointed Senior Vice President, R&D Technologies, in 2024. His GSK profile describes the group's remit as including generative AI-driven antibody, oligonucleotide and small-molecule discovery and lab-in-a-loop engineering [>GSK-E04]. Partner releases give Kim Branson's title as SVP Global Head of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning on 8 January 2026 and as Chief AI Officer on 26 August 2026; we found no appointment or role-creation date [>GSK-E30]. GSK created a cross-functional AI Governance Council in 2023 to oversee its AI strategy [>GSK-E10].
Under rule AR7a, four deals are context, not T2 commitments. Helix announced on 7 January 2026 a multi-year collaboration giving GSK access to its GenoSphere cohorts, with a GSK executive quoted [>GSK-E15]. An SCI article of 21 January 2025 names GSK among 14 companies funding the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project [>GSK-E07]. Illumina announced in January 2024 that GSK had joined the Alliance for Genomic Discovery, which co-funds whole-genome sequencing [>GSK-E03]. These three are data access. The Jackson Laboratory and New York Stem Cell Foundation Collaborative announced on 17 February 2026 a five-year collaboration with GSK on stem cell models of neurodegeneration, drawing on the partner's patient cohorts and automation platform [>GSK-E18]. This is partner capability. None of the four sources states AI or computational discovery work for the deal, so none is counted in T1 either.
Enterprise programmes: GSK's Accelerate Growth programme targets £1.9 billion of annual savings by 2029 for costs of £2.4 billion, savings that "are expected to be enabled by technology and AI" (Q2 2026 results, 28 July 2026) [>GSK-E24]. A US investment plan announced on 17 September 2025 includes new AI and digital capabilities at five manufacturing sites [>GSK-E13]. On 28 July 2026 GSK announced a £400 million R&D centre on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus with "tech-enabled labs" for more than 1,000 scientists [>GSK-E22], and that it will vacate its Stevenage R&D site, with a phased move by 2029 [>GSK-E23].
Media reported on 2 February 2026 that GSK is cutting up to about 350 R&D jobs in the UK and US [>GSK-E17]. Neither this report nor the Stevenage exit is linked to AI in discovery or lab digitalisation in its source, and we identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.
Coverage limits
- Neither reviewer located the Q2 2026 results transcript, so every W1 event-type cell is partial. One reviewer also did not locate the Q3 2025 transcript.
- In W0, one reviewer did not locate the Q3 2024 transcript or the Q1 2025 slides, and the Q1 2025 transcript PDF had no extractable text.
- Business Wire and GlobeNewswire blocked access. The Noetik and Relation releases were read through copies on 1stOncology and BioSpace. Fierce Biotech and Pharmaceutical Technology also blocked access.
- The UK Biobank site blocked access, so GSK's membership of the proteomics project rests on a media source [>GSK-E07].
- Annual-report first-public dates are uncertain, because no publication timestamp was established [>GSK-E09, >E19, >E20, >E21].
- Patents are not among the searched signal types. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
- Recruitment: one reviewer keyword-screened the descriptions of all 684 job pages, the other title-screened 688 job IDs. Only the 54 postings classified are in the table.
- Two independent reviewers searched GSK, and the final rows are their source-verified union. That union was more complete than either search alone in this test, but it does not show that both did not miss the same events. The Relation expansion was found by one reviewer only [>GSK-E28].
- SEC EDGAR was not used.
Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)
- Lab systems and lab data roles sit in different units. A Senior Director in R&D Digital & Tech, employed in the Global Tech Organisation, is to set a lab and data transformation roadmap for a function described as covering 17 sites and 5,000 scientists [>GSK-R03]. A Lab Robotics Manager and a Lab Data Manager in Cambridge, Massachusetts, are to work with Quality, Tech and Procurement on technology and data standards, and the Lab Data Manager supports MyLabData [>GSK-R04, >R05]. The R&D Technologies group's stated remit includes lab-in-a-loop engineering [>GSK-E04, >E20]. What is the remit of each unit for lab systems and lab data? Who decides on new lab robotics and data systems, and how are the interfaces between these units governed, including through the move from Stevenage to Cambridge by 2029 [>GSK-E22, >E23]?
- GSK has external AI-discovery agreements with Noetik and Relation and lists a "Chai2 AI system" among business development since 2023 [>GSK-E16, >E29, >E06, >E28, >E25]. Its AI for Science team builds models and agentic systems on Google Cloud services [>GSK-R01, >R02], and its head of AI and ML now holds the title Chief AI Officer [>GSK-E30]. An enterprise procurement role covers a Data, AI and Infrastructure category of about £300 million of spend [>GSK-R20]. Who holds decision rights over licensing an external AI discovery model rather than building one, and does such licensing pass through that procurement category, business development or another route? How is funding for these decisions set within the Accelerate Growth cost programme [>GSK-E24]?
