Eli Lilly
Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.
Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.
Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.
Summary
The reviewed sources identify six T1 initiatives with an AI-discovery commitment change involving Lilly first disclosed in the year to 5 October 2026, and six in the year before [>LLY-E01, >E03 to >E09, >E21, >E22, >E24 to >E27]. They include the launch of Lilly TuneLab, a federated AI/ML discovery platform, and an AI supercomputer that Lilly announced it is building with NVIDIA, which a joint co-innovation lab later expanded on [>LLY-E08, >E21, >E22]. The co-innovation lab is the only T2 commitment change identified, in the year to 5 October 2026 [>LLY-E22]. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 22 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, none with ambiguous vacancy status [the 22 R&D theme postings among >LLY-R01 to >R64]. Three CMC and process chemistry postings in Bioproduct R&D and Product Research and Development, and a CMC Data Backbone described in postings, are process development, so under the v0.4.3 boundary they are outside T2 [>LLY-R02, R13, >R59, E36]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Lilly published two of these rows itself [>LLY-E08, >E21] and issued two jointly, with Purdue and with NVIDIA [>LLY-E06, >E22]. The chief AI officer appointment rests on a media report of Lilly's announcement [>LLY-E01]. The other nine rows were announced by the partner, and only the 2026 Insilico release quotes a Lilly executive [>LLY-E03, >E04, >E05, >E07, >E09, >E24, >E25, >E26, >E27]. Lilly confirmed the chief AI officer appointment in a later release and the co-innovation lab in its Q4 2025 results release [>LLY-E01, >E22]. We found no Lilly confirmation of the partner-announced deals. Lilly's own sites were blocked, so any confirmation published only there was not reachable.
The chief AI officer appointment counts in T1 because the source states a remit that includes drug discovery (C42-7) [>LLY-E01]. The 2025 Insilico deal and the insitro and second BigHat deals are expansions, because each release says it extends the earlier relationship [>LLY-E24, >E09, >E05]. The 2026 Insilico deal is a separate commitment, because its release states new scope and money and does not say it extends the 2025 deal [>LLY-E26].
By event date, we counted six T1 initiatives with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025): the chief AI officer appointment, BigHat, Purdue, Superluminal, TuneLab and insitro. We counted six in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026): BigHat, the NVIDIA supercomputer and co-innovation lab, the 2025 Insilico deal, Chai, the 2026 Insilico deal and Profluent. By first disclosure, the T1 count is also six in W0 and six in W1. BigHat counts in both years. T2 is zero in W0 and one in W1 in both views: the co-innovation lab, which is tagged to both themes and so also appears in T1 [>LLY-E22]. Ten T1 milestones were disclosed in W1: nine TuneLab partner joins and the LillyPod go-live [>LLY-E10 to >E18, >E23]. Each partner join is a milestone under the TuneLab parent, not a commitment change, because each is a partner release with no Lilly quote and no Lilly statement of new scope or resources of its own (C42-5) [>LLY-E10 to >E18]. The AI4D team is observed only through job postings first seen on 6 October 2026, after W1 ends, so it is not counted (C42-17) [>LLY-E29]. Six further capabilities described only in those postings were first seen on the same day, so none counts as first disclosed in either window [>LLY-E30 to >E35]. A seventh, the CMC Data Backbone, is process development and is context under the v0.4.3 boundary [LLY-E36]. Under the opposite reading of borderline clarification C42-4, counting the Gateway Labs incubator sites as T1 commitments, T1 would be seven in W0 and seven in W1 in both views [>LLY-E19, >E20]; under a broader reading of C42-2 that treats the 2026 Insilico in-licence as context, T1 W1 would be five in both views [>LLY-E26].
Coverage is partial for both themes in both years. The negative-event and per-event-type search families are complete after a top-up search on 6 October 2026, but six other source families are partial and the 10-K family was blocked in both years. The table marks the 10-K, partner newswire and per-event-type search families as not comparable between the years, so no comparison between the years is made.
Three incubator and site announcements are recorded as context under C42-4 or because no AI is stated (see Context).
Identified recruitment
On 6 October 2026 the careers.lilly.com US sitemap listed 649 unique requisitions by one reviewer's count. The two reviewers classified 70 postings from their duties. We observed 22 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class, 12 T1 and 13 T2; the three roles tagged both appear in each split [>LLY-R45, >R46, >R52]. No Lilly posting shows an openings field, so vacancy status is not recorded for any of the 22 and none has ambiguous vacancy status. A further 18 are plant, quality or manufacturing roles, 16 are enterprise roles, 2 are postdoctoral research roles and 12 are out of scope. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.
The T1 postings describe AI and computation roles in discovery: - at the co-innovation lab in South San Francisco, a Sr. AI Science Lead to set scientific direction for large-scale AI research programmes in drug discovery, an AI Scientist to design and train chemistry and biology foundation models, and an HPC Systems Administrator for AI/HPC platforms running scientific ML workloads [>LLY-R35, >R36, >R38] - for TuneLab in San Francisco, two software engineers and a Sr. Director of Strategic Partnerships to build and manage partnerships for the platform [>LLY-R48, >R49, >R57] - in the AI4D group of Lilly Research Laboratories, a Forward Deployed AI Engineer who will "embed directly with research teams across therapeutic areas" [>LLY-R04] - a Director or Senior Director for cheminformatics and applied AI in Early Molecule Discovery, Boston [>LLY-R39] - a founding AVP for protein foundation models in the BioTDR generative biologics design platform, San Diego [>LLY-R60]
The three postings tagged both themes are in South San Francisco. Two agentic automation roles are to connect agentic AI to lab robots, instruments and ELN/LIMS so that AI plans and runs experiments, and one states "We are rebuilding the Design-Make-Test-Analyze (DMTA) cycle" [>LLY-R45, >R46]. A scientific project leader is to lead machine learning and quantum chemistry modelling of reaction outcomes with high-throughput experimentation and lab automation [>LLY-R52].
The T2 postings describe lab automation and lab data roles: - two lab automation software engineers for biologics discovery in San Diego, building AI-integrated closed-loop automation and the integration between lab automation and AI-driven orchestration [>LLY-R03, >R08] - a Director or Senior Director lab automation engineer and an automation scientist for Discovery Oncology in New York [>LLY-R63, >R64] - in Shanghai, a lab analytical automation scientist for a high-throughput chemistry and biology workcell, and four RNA automation roles that include LIMS integration [>LLY-R01, >R41 to >R44] - in Bangalore, a principal platform engineer for a research data platform used by research scientists [LLY-R61]
Three postings that were T2 under v0.4.2 are process development, so under the v0.4.3 boundary they are out of scope: in Bioproduct R&D, Indianapolis, a data scientist for CMC data products and an agentic AI data engineer for the CMC Data Backbone [>LLY-R02, R13], and in Bangalore a process R&D computational chemist who helps create data chemistry platforms for route development [>LLY-R59].
Two postdoctoral postings, for AI-powered QSP modelling and for AI/ML cell culture modelling in process development, are outside the R&D count; the process development postdoc no longer carries a theme under the v0.4.3 boundary [>LLY-R20, >R21]. Enterprise postings include machine learning engineers for enterprise AI engineering and commercial analytics in Bangalore and agentic engineers in the Digital Core organisation in Hyderabad [>LLY-R34, >R51, >R65, >R28, >R53]. Three AI roles whose duties name no discovery activity are enterprise roles under C42-21 [>LLY-R22, >R40, >R54]. An applied AI engineer in Clinical Informatics, whose posting frames trial and biobank data work as evidence for target evaluation, is out of scope under C42-22; counted as T1, it would make the T1 split 13 [LLY-R11].
No Lilly careers page shows a date-posted field. Dates in the embedded job data may record a refresh, so they are not reliable.
No LinkedIn company insights were collected for Lilly.
Technology mentions in recruitment
Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 135 Lilly mentions: 13 explicit use, 17 integration or environment, 2 required experience, 3 preferred experience, 1 planned implementation and 99 alternatives. - Named as existing systems: Lilly TuneLab, described in the three TuneLab postings [>LLY-R48, >R49, >R57]. LillyPod, "our wholly owned 1,016-GPU NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra SuperPOD", on which the BioTDR leader has dedicated capacity [>LLY-R60]. AWS services, Kubernetes/EKS and Jenkins, which the research data platform engineer is to own and evolve [LLY-R61]. Docker and Kubernetes, which a San Diego lab automation engineer is to use to deploy services [>LLY-R08]. This is role-specific wording. - Integration responsibilities: San Diego and Shanghai automation roles are to integrate with LIMS, with no product named [>LLY-R03, >R08, >R41 to >R44]. The CMC Data Backbone engineer, a process development posting outside the themes from v0.4.3, is to ensure that data from "internal LIMS/ELN systems and external CDMO partners" flows into one backbone [LLY-R13]. The two agentic automation roles work across Hamilton, Tecan and Opentrons automation platforms and with ELN/LIMS [>LLY-R45, >R46]. - Required experience: PyTorch [>LLY-R60] and running NVIDIA GPU infrastructure [>LLY-R38]. - Preferred experience: AWS [>LLY-R04], Cellario [>LLY-R63] and LIMS/ELN engineering [>LLY-R46]. - Planned implementation: MCP integrations that connect AI agents to the research data platform [LLY-R61]. - Lists of examples: Benchling, LabGuru or Genedata among lab data platforms [>LLY-R03]; Benchling, LabVantage or OpenLABS among LIMS, ELN, SDMS or CDS systems, in the CMC Data Backbone posting [LLY-R13]; Tecan, Hamilton and Labcyte Echo [>LLY-R41 to >R44]; Cellario, Green Button Go, Momentum and VWorks as scheduling software [>LLY-R08, >R63, >R64]; Microsoft Fabric, Databricks and Airflow, in the two CMC postings [>LLY-R02, R13]; PyTorch or JAX [>LLY-R35, >R36]; RDKit, OpenEye and Claude Code [>LLY-R39]; Cursor and Claude Code [>LLY-R48, >R49]; NVIDIA BioNeMo and Omniverse [>LLY-R45]; ASKCOS, Synthia and Reaxys, in the process R&D posting [>LLY-R59]. The CMC and process R&D postings are outside the themes from v0.4.3 [>LLY-R02, R13, >R59].
No ELN or LIMS product is named as in use in the R&D postings, and no category (ELN, LIMS, cloud) is recorded as explicit use. Outside R&D, manufacturing lab postings name LabVantage LIMS, NuGenesis SDMS/ELN, Empower CDS and MODA as systems the role configures or supports [>LLY-R23, >R67, >R50].
Deployment evidence
- An NVIDIA blog of 26 February 2026 says "Lilly this week launched the most powerful AI factory wholly owned and operated by a pharmaceutical company", named LillyPod, and that it is set to support training of protein diffusion, small-molecule graph neural network and genomics foundation models [>LLY-E23]. This is a partner source quoting Lilly executives. A posting first seen on 6 October 2026 gives a BioTDR role dedicated capacity on LillyPod [>LLY-R60].
- Nine partners announced TuneLab arrangements between January and September 2026, each in a release with no Lilly quote [>LLY-E10 to >E18]. Benchling, Schrodinger, Revvity and CDD describe offering TuneLab models through their software, and Benchling says its customers will be able to opt in later in 2026 [>LLY-E10, >E11, >E12, >E13]. Axcelead says it will contribute proprietary data, and Charles River, Twist, Ginkgo Datapoints and GenScript describe testing, data-generation or wet-lab services for TuneLab companies [>LLY-E14 to >E18]. Revvity states that "Lilly and Revvity will jointly fund access for selected participants" [>LLY-E12].
- Postings first seen on 6 October 2026 describe automated systems "that power our NY lab's discovery pipeline" in Discovery Oncology, and an existing high-throughput chemistry and biology automation workcell in Shanghai [>LLY-E32, >E33]. Their start dates are not stated.
- Postings first seen the same day describe work in progress: a San Diego biologics automation team "working toward a vision of closed-loop autonomous discovery", BioTDR, which "is creating an integrated de novo design platform", RNA automation in Shanghai and a chemical reactivity mapping initiative [>LLY-E31, >E30, >E34, >E35]. We found no evidence that any of these is complete.
- Postings first seen on 6 October 2026 say Lilly and NVIDIA "are launching" the co-innovation lab [>LLY-R35, >R45]. The January release said its work was expected to begin in South San Francisco early in 2026 [>LLY-E22].
- We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.
Context
Thomas Fuchs is quoted as senior vice president and chief AI officer in Lilly's supercomputer release of 28 October 2025 [>LLY-E21]. The LillyPod blog quotes Diogo Rau as executive vice president and chief information and digital officer [>LLY-E23]. The TuneLab partnerships posting places TuneLab with Lilly Ventures, Lilly Gateway Labs and Lilly ExploR&D as pillars of Catalyze360 [>LLY-R57].
Under C42-4, the Gateway Labs incubator sites are context, not T1 commitments, because no AI or computational discovery scope is stated. Lilly opened a San Diego site of 82,514 square feet for up to 15 companies on 26 September 2025 and announced plans for a Philadelphia site on 19 November 2025 [>LLY-E19, >E20].
Other context: Lilly announced the $4.5 billion Medicine Foundry, a site for manufacturing innovation and clinical trial supply, in October 2024, before both windows; no AI is stated [>LLY-E02]. The supercomputer release lists manufacturing, medical imaging and enterprise AI agents as further applications [>LLY-E21]. In June 2026 Lilly launched the Memory Radio Station, a public awareness campaign that uses generative AI [>LLY-E28]. A posting first seen on 6 October 2026 describes work on a "modernized CMC Data Backbone" unifying LIMS/ELN and CDMO data in Bioproduct R&D; this is process development, so under the v0.4.3 boundary it is context, not T2 [LLY-E36].
We identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. Neither reviewer could run the negative-event web search. A top-up search for each theme on 6 October 2026 returned only closures dated 2006 and 2019, before both windows. Beyond that, the result rests on a screen of PR Newswire release titles and the fetched sources. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.
Coverage limits
- lilly.com and investor.lilly.com blocked access, lilly.gcs-web.com returned Access Denied, and lilly.mediaroom.com disallows all agents in robots.txt. Lilly releases were therefore read from PR Newswire copies. Any Lilly-hosted items not on the wire were missed; the co-innovation lab release was read on NVIDIA's newsroom because investor.nvidia.com also blocked access [>LLY-E22].
- No 10-K was read for either year. SEC EDGAR requires contact details in the user agent, which the network rules forbid, and annualreports.com disallows the PDF path in robots.txt.
- Results slide decks and call transcripts were not retrieved. Only the quarterly results releases on PR Newswire were read.
- Business Wire and GlobeNewswire blocked access. Partner releases were read through copies on BioSpace, StockTitan, medtechspectrum.com and partner sites, so some first-public dates are intervals or copy dates [>LLY-E14, >E15, >E25, >E27]. The Revvity, Charles River, Twist and Ginkgo investor sites, Fierce Biotech, Becker's Hospital Review and European Pharmaceutical Review also blocked access, and HPCwire disallows AI agents.
- The shared web-search budget ran out during review. A top-up on 6 October 2026 ran ten searches: a negative-event search for each theme, the two T2 searches (lab automation, and ELN, LIMS or scientific data platforms), and the capacity, regulatory programme, open release, venture, consortium and academic searches. None found a new qualifying item in either window, and no count changed. The consortium results read do not name Lilly as a member of the AISB/OpenFold3 federated group. These searches still did not run: site-restricted Business Wire and GlobeNewswire searches, an IHI membership search, a university newsroom sweep, transcript searches and the Lilly Ventures portfolio (lillyventures.com redirects to the blocked lilly.com). The T2 counts rest on the PR Newswire title screen, the results releases and the two top-up T2 searches.
- Rows drawn from job postings take 6 October 2026 as their first public date, because no page shows a date-posted field [>LLY-E29 to E36].
- Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
- Recruitment: one reviewer title-screened the 649 requisitions in the US sitemap; other locale sitemaps were not compared. Only the 70 postings classified are in the table.
- Two independent reviewers searched Lilly, and the final rows are their source-verified union. That union contains rows that each reviewer missed, but it does not show that both did not miss the same events. The BigHat rows and Profluent were found by one reviewer, and Superluminal and GenScript by the other [>LLY-E03, >E04, >E05, >E27, >E07, >E18].
Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)
- Lab automation and lab data roles sit in several units: a biologics automation team in San Diego [>LLY-R03, >R08, >E31], Discovery Oncology automation in New York [>LLY-R63, >R64, >E32], RNA and workcell automation in Shanghai [>LLY-R01, >R41 to >R44], agentic automation roles linked to the co-innovation lab [>LLY-R45, >R46, >E22], a research data platform team in Bangalore [LLY-R61], and, on the process development side outside T2 under the v0.4.3 boundary, the CMC Data Backbone in Bioproduct R&D [LLY-R13, E36]. Several are to integrate with LIMS or ELN systems that no R&D posting names. What is the remit of each unit for lab orchestration software and lab data systems? Who decides on scheduling software and LIMS or ELN integration, and how are the interfaces between the co-innovation lab's agentic systems and the site labs governed?
- Lilly has external AI-discovery agreements with Chai, Insilico, Profluent, BigHat, insitro and Superluminal [>LLY-E25, >E24, >E26, >E27, >E03, >E09, >E07], while postings describe internal AI4D and BioTDR groups and dedicated capacity on LillyPod [>LLY-R04, >R60, >E23]. The chief AI officer's stated remit includes drug discovery [>LLY-E01], and the chief information and digital officer spoke at the LillyPod launch [>LLY-E23]. TuneLab partner arrangements are announced by partners, one stating joint funding with Lilly, and a TuneLab partnerships director is being recruited [>LLY-E10 to >E18, >E12, >R57]. Who holds decision rights over licensing an external AI discovery platform rather than building on Lilly's own compute, and do TuneLab partner arrangements pass through the TuneLab team, business development or procurement? How is funding for these decisions set, including the up to $1 billion co-innovation lab commitment [>LLY-E22]?
