Novo Nordisk
Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Company scope: Novo Nordisk A/S, the operating company. Novo Holdings and the Novo Nordisk Foundation are separate entities and are outside the scope of this brief; their deals are excluded unless Novo Nordisk A/S is itself a party. Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.
Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.
Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.
Summary
The reviewed sources identify four T1 initiatives with an AI-discovery commitment change involving Novo Nordisk first disclosed in the year to 5 October 2026, and six in the year before [>NVO-E03, >E04, >E08, >E09, >E12 to >E14, >E25, >E28 to >E31]. The four in the later year are partnerships with OpenAI, AWS and Anthropic, each stating discovery scope, and an AI-enabled macrocycle discovery deal with Orbis Medicines [>NVO-E25, >E28, >E30, >E31]. We identified no commitment change in company lab digitalisation (T2) in either year in the searched sources. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 4 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, none with ambiguous vacancy status [>NVO-R12, >R13, >R14, >R24]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Novo Nordisk published the OpenAI release itself and issued the Valo, AWS and Anthropic releases jointly [>NVO-E25, >E04, >E28, >E30]. The OpenFold join is announced by the consortium, which names Novo Nordisk as a member [>NVO-E09]. The other six releases, covering five initiatives, were announced by partners. Five of them quote a Novo Nordisk executive [>NVO-E03, >E12, >E13, >E14, >E31]. The Gensaic text read has no Novo Nordisk quote, and its release body was not read because Business Wire was blocked [>NVO-E08]. The partner releases are listed on the Novo Nordisk partnership-news page, which shows no listing date, so no confirmation date is recorded. Whether such a listing counts as company confirmation is not settled by the rules.
The Valo agreement is an expansion, because the joint release says it expands the 2023 collaboration and adds programmes and payments (C42-1) [>NVO-E04]. The DCAI and NVIDIA releases form one initiative, because the NVIDIA release says its work supports Novo Nordisk's agreement with DCAI [>NVO-E12, >E13]. DCAI was formed and funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and EIFO in 2024; Novo Nordisk is the customer under the agreement, so it is in scope [>NVO-E12]. The Orbis release names Novo Holdings as an existing Orbis investor; that stake is excluded, and only the Novo Nordisk investment in the same deal is counted [>NVO-E31, >E32]. The AWS release is recorded as two rows: the partnership, whose discovery services are stated as intent, and the London hub, which the release describes as already created, with no creation date [>NVO-E28, >E29].
By event date, we counted six T1 initiatives with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025): Variant Bio, the Valo expansion, Gensaic, the OpenFold Consortium join, Gefion access with the NVIDIA collaboration, and Deep Apple. We counted four in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026): OpenAI, AWS, Anthropic and Orbis. By first disclosure, the T1 count is also six in W0 and four in W1. The undated hub row counts only by disclosure, but the dated partnership row under the same initiative keeps AWS in W1 in both views [>NVO-E28, >E29]. T2 is zero in both views and both years. One T1 milestone was disclosed in W1: the OpenFold3 preview, in which a media report lists Novo Nordisk among early adopters [>NVO-E18]. Existing capabilities first disclosed numbered four in T1 in W0 [>NVO-E05, >E06, >E11, >E15] and two in T1 in W1 [>NVO-E24, >E33], and none in T2. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes. Three further T1 capabilities appear only on undated pages or in a posting first seen on 6 October 2026, after W1 ends, so none counts as first disclosed in either window [>NVO-E34, >E36, >E38]. No negative change was counted.
The OpenFold join date comes from the Business Wire URL datestamp linked from the consortium news page, because the release itself was blocked. If URL datestamps are not accepted, the join is date-uncertain and T1 W0 falls to five in both views [>NVO-E09]. Under the opposite reading of borderline clarification C42-4, the first cohort of the LAB eN2 accelerator with Evotec would be a T1 milestone rather than context, making T1 milestones disclosed in W0 one; the headline counts would not change [>NVO-E02]. The opposite readings of C42-2 and C42-12 change no count. Three readings that the adjudication notes record, and no clarification settles, would also change counts: tagging the AWS partnership to T2 gives T2 W1 one in both views, reading the Vivtex oral-delivery licence as discovery gives T1 W1 five, and reading C42-3 to cover any AI platform makes the Cellular Intelligence investment a commitment, also giving T1 W1 five [>NVO-E28, >E23, >E26].
Coverage is partial for both themes in both years. Seven search families are complete: the company press release archive, annual reports, consortium, academic, corporate venture, one search per event type and one negative-event search per theme. Two are partial: results presentations and transcripts, and partner newswires. The coverage table marks those two families as not comparable between the years, so no comparison between the years is made.
Several deals with AI or discovery content are recorded as context or excluded (see Context).
Identified recruitment
On 6 October 2026 the Novo Nordisk careers search API listed 422 requisitions by each reviewer's count. A common title filter returned the same 16 requisitions to both reviewers, and each added others outside the filter; together they classified 25 postings. We observed 4 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class (2 T1, 2 T2); no role is tagged to both themes [>NVO-R12, >R13, >R14, >R24]. No Novo Nordisk posting shows an openings field, so vacancy status is not recorded for any of the 25 and none has ambiguous vacancy status. A further 11 are enterprise roles, 7 are plant, quality or manufacturing roles, 1 is a student role and 2 are out of scope. The two out-of-scope postings are R&D roles with no AI or lab-systems duties [>NVO-R10, >R11]. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.
The T1 postings describe modelling and data science roles in discovery: - in London, a Data Science Specialist in Computational Real-World Evidence (cRWE), part of Data Science within the AI & Digital Innovation organisation. The role applies machine learning, causal inference and AI to observational human data to support "disease understanding, target discovery, target maturation and early development decisions" [>NVO-R14] - in Måløv, a PKPD Senior Principal Scientist in DMPK and Modelling Sciences, Global Research, to set direction for translational PKPD screening and mechanistic modelling. The role also spans clinical development and regulatory submission; it is counted as computation applied to discovery [>NVO-R24]
The T2 postings are both in Target Identification and Maturation (TIM), Oxford, and describe lab automation for target discovery: - a Senior Automation & Screening Scientist, to develop automated workflows that let cell-based assays be deployed on "end-to-end screening platforms", working with automation engineers, and to contribute to new automation technologies, digital tools and data-enabled solutions [>NVO-R13] - a Principal Scientist, Functional Genomics, to drive "the adoption of automation technologies and digital applications to scale data generation" for target discovery [>NVO-R12]
Both TIM postings refer to FAIR data practices [>NVO-R12, >R13].
Three R&D-wide AI and IT postings are enterprise roles, because their duties name no discovery activity or lab system (C42-21). A Director, R&D IT Architecture in Søborg is a new role leading about ten architecture specialists across R&D applications, platforms and data [>NVO-R15]. A Senior Data Scientist in the Cognitive AI and Reasoning team in London is to build LLM retrieval, summarisation and agentic products for R&D [>NVO-R17]. A Lead Software Engineer in London is to set the technical direction for agentic AI products across the R&D value chain, in the recently established AI Product Engineering team [>NVO-R22]. Read as theme roles, the IT architecture role would make the T2 split 3, and the two AI product roles would make the T1 split 4 [>NVO-R15, >R17, >R22].
Other enterprise postings include an AI/ML Specialist in CMC Development, Bagsværd, to set AI strategy for CMC within enterprise guardrails [>NVO-R06], a Director, Data and AI Architecture [>NVO-R08] and a Principal Data Platform Engineer for the enterprise DataCore platform [>NVO-R16]. An IT Solution Manager for Laboratory Systems in Gentofte supports the QC and ASAT laboratories that release product, which are outside T2 under AR7 [>NVO-R07]. A student post in Hillerød is in a Computerised Laboratory Systems team, also within Enterprise IT and Quality [>NVO-R09].
No Novo Nordisk careers page shows a date-posted field. Several show application deadlines, one of them 6 October 2026 [>NVO-R14].
No LinkedIn company insights were collected for Novo Nordisk.
Technology mentions in recruitment
Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 51 Novo Nordisk mentions: 6 explicit use, 6 integration or environment, 12 required experience, 3 preferred experience, 22 alternatives and 2 unclear. - Named as existing systems, all in enterprise postings: the DataCore Platform, "the enterprise data and analytics platform built on Databricks" [>NVO-R16]; ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, which a finance posting calls "Our tools", and Power BI reporting [>NVO-R21]; Adobe Experience Manager and Adobe Experience Platform in a commercial posting [>NVO-R02]. This is role-specific wording. - Integration responsibilities: the DataCore engineer leads architecture decisions across AWS, Azure, Terraform and Databricks [>NVO-R16]; a Bangalore data architect designs patterns using Snowflake and dbt [>NVO-R19]; the Cognitive AI data scientist builds and maintains vector databases, with no product named [>NVO-R17]. - Required experience: in the R&D theme postings, laboratory automation platforms and FAIR data practices [>NVO-R13], automation and digital tools for assay development [>NVO-R12] and cloud-based high-performance computing [>NVO-R14]. Elsewhere, examples include MCP implementation and LLM systems [>NVO-R17], Python [>NVO-R22] and SAP EM in two manufacturing postings [>NVO-R04, >R05]. - Preferred experience: Snowflake [>NVO-R20], Emerson DeltaV [>NVO-R23] and MES integration [>NVO-R25]. - Lists of examples: Phoenix WinNonlin/NLME or NONMEM, and MATLAB among analytical tools, for PKPD modelling [>NVO-R24]; Python and/or R [>NVO-R14]; AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, and Hadoop, Spark or Kafka [>NVO-R20]; Power BI "or comparable BI tools" [>NVO-R19]; DeltaV, iFix, OSI PI, iBatch, Syncade and PAS-X among manufacturing control systems [>NVO-R01, >R23]. - Unclear: DeltaV named only in a job title [>NVO-R05], and cloud data platforms in a data and AI architecture role [>NVO-R08].
No ELN, LIMS or lab automation product is named in the R&D theme postings, and no category (ELN, LIMS, cloud) is recorded as explicit use for Novo Nordisk.
Deployment evidence
- An AWS HPC Blog post of 3 June 2025, co-written by Novo Nordisk staff, says "Novo Nordisk developed the Research Collaboration Platform (RCP), a comprehensive solution built on AWS that provides a secure and flexible environment for computational research", and describes using it with Columbia University to train OpenFold3. It states that the RCP team achieved an 85% cost reduction against On-Demand instances for that use case [>NVO-E11]. The platform's start date is not stated.
- The Annual Report 2024 says that combining AI with high-throughput experimentation let Novo Nordisk assess one billion virtual molecules by computer modelling and screen about 2,500 compounds in the lab, leading to a selective amylin compound [>NVO-E05]. The same report says the Boston-area R&D hub works with local partners on machine learning, big data and AI, in a passage on accelerating the discovery of new targets [>NVO-E06].
- A Capital Markets Day R&D slide of 21 September 2026 says AI-enabled active learning, combining human-designed sequences with machine-learning-assisted design, accelerated the design of a once-monthly amylin analogue. The slide shows about 2,000 molecules tested, about 60% fewer design-make-test-analyse cycles and 50% less time to candidate, and is marked illustrative [>NVO-E33].
- An NVIDIA release of 16 March 2026 states that "Novo Nordisk, Viva Biotech and Manifold Bio are using Proteina-Complexa to design proteins that bind to a target protein, and have experimentally tested the generated designs" [>NVO-E24]. This is a vendor-only list mention with no Novo Nordisk quote.
- The AWS release says engineers and scientists from both companies "are using AWS AI technologies alongside Novo Nordisk data" in the London hub [>NVO-E29]. The hub's creation date is not stated. The target identification and design services in the same release are stated as intended use [>NVO-E28].
- A media report of the OpenFold3 preview on 28 October 2025 lists Novo Nordisk among early adopters [>NVO-E18]. A list mention does not establish deployment.
- Three sources dated in neither window, two undated pages and a posting first seen on 6 October 2026, describe further capabilities: the cRWE team, which applies machine learning and AI to target discovery and validation [>NVO-E34]; the Oxford research centre, which uses "advanced computational biology" among other methods to identify drug targets [>NVO-E36]; and the MIT-Novo Nordisk AI Postdoctoral Fellows Program, whose focus areas include AI-driven drug discovery [>NVO-E38].
- The figures above are company or co-authored statements about single programmes or workloads. We found no adoption metric across discovery and no independently reported benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.
Context
Mishal Patel is quoted as senior vice president, AI and digital innovation, in the NVIDIA release of 11 June 2025, and is listed as GVP, AI & Digital Innovation, beside Martin Holst Lange, CSO and EVP Research & Development, on the Capital Markets Day 2026 R&D strategy deck. We found no appointment date [>NVO-E15, >E33]. Lars Fogh Iversen, Senior Vice President of External and Exploratory Innovation, is quoted in the DCAI release [>NVO-E12]. Mike Doustdar is quoted as president and CEO in the OpenAI, AWS and Anthropic releases [>NVO-E25, >E28, >E30].
A trade media item reports that Novo Nordisk has named Anja Leth Zimmer Chief AI Officer to lead its enterprise AI agenda [>NVO-E20]. The page shows only an "Updated" timestamp of 23 January 2026, and we found no company release. The role states no discovery remit, so it is context under C42-7 [>NVO-E20].
The Annual Report 2025 describes a 2025 reconfiguration of the R&D organisation into an end-to-end engine "enhanced by AI and digital technologies" [>NVO-E21]. The Annual Report 2024 says Novo Nordisk had initiated building an AI Ethics and Compliance framework, and the 2025 report says the framework catalogues all deployed AI systems across the organisation [>NVO-E07, >E22]. A posting first seen on 6 October 2026 describes a recently established AI Product Engineering team building AI products across R&D "from research assistants to compliance automation"; with no discovery activity named, it is context under C42-9 [>NVO-E35, >R22]. An undated company page describes an R&D Digital Hub in London for digital talent and AI ecosystem collaboration; the AWS release does not name it [>NVO-E37, >E28].
The three 2026 technology partnerships also cover enterprise uses. OpenAI is to support workforce upskilling and AI literacy and efficiency in manufacturing, supply chain and corporate operations [>NVO-E25]. The AWS agreement covers cloud modernisation and AI agents for operations, and the release reports earlier results in clinical documentation time and employee productivity [>NVO-E28]. Anthropic models are also to be used for AI-driven software development [>NVO-E30].
Deals recorded as context or excluded: - Septerna, a GPCR oral small-molecule collaboration of about $2.2 billion announced on 14 May 2025, is excluded because no AI or computational method is stated [>NVO-E10]. - Vivtex, an oral-delivery licence of up to $2.1 billion announced on 25 February 2026, is context: the AI and computational simulation belong to the partner's platform and optimise oral formulation, which AR6 places after candidate selection [>NVO-E23]. - A new phase of the Aspect Biosystems cell therapy partnership, announced on 20 January 2026, is context; AI appears only in the partner's bioprinting platform [>NVO-E19]. - Novo Nordisk's equity investment in Cellular Intelligence, announced on 11 May 2026 with an out-licence, is context: the investee's stated AI use here is clinical development and manufacturing [>NVO-E26]. - A Science2Medicine iNNvest equity investment in Eikonizo and the first academic projects selected by the LAB eN2 accelerator with Evotec, both in December 2024, are context, with no AI scope stated [>NVO-E01, >E02].
On 10 September 2025 Novo Nordisk announced that it intends to reduce its global workforce by about 9,000 of 78,400 positions, with DKK 8 billion of annualised savings expected by the end of 2026 [>NVO-E16]. BioSpace reported on 1 October 2025 that Novo Nordisk had terminated its 2021 cell therapy deal with Heartseed, citing a partner filing [>NVO-E17]. On 11 June 2026 Novo Nordisk reported an IT security incident involving unauthorised access to a limited number of internal IT systems, with no R&D or lab system named [>NVO-E27]. None of these is linked to AI in discovery or lab digitalisation in its source, and we identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.
Coverage limits
- Cohort 2 reviewers ran a search phase capped at nine web searches each. Seven source families are complete for both themes in both years: the company press release archive, annual reports, consortium, academic, corporate venture, one search per event type, and one negative-event search per theme. Two families are partial: results presentations and transcripts, and partner newswires.
- Call transcripts are not published on the company site, which offers webcasts only, and neither reviewer searched for them elsewhere. One reviewer did not read the Capital Markets Day 2026 therapy-area decks. Form 20-F PDFs were not read separately, because the annual report is the statutory report.
- Business Wire returned 403 on robots.txt and GlobeNewswire gave no reply, so no release was fetched from either. The Gensaic and Eikonizo releases were read only as summaries on the Novo Nordisk partnership-news page, and the OpenFold releases only through the consortium news page and a media report, with dates taken from datelines and release URLs [>NVO-E08, >E01, >E09, >E18]. Novo Nordisk's own releases were read in full through its news-search API.
- Fierce Biotech blocked access, including its Gensaic deal article, so the Gensaic deal value is not recorded [>NVO-E08]. Pharmaceutical Technology and AI Magazine also blocked access; the Chief AI Officer item was read on CDO Magazine [>NVO-E20]. The IMMvention site returned a proxy error.
- Searches not run because of the search budget: site-restricted Business Wire and GlobeNewswire searches for Novo Nordisk AI or machine-learning releases, and a search for the full Gensaic release. The adjudication notes list two further searches to run: one for the OpenFold new-members release text and date, and one for Novo Nordisk earnings call transcripts across the eight quarters.
- Three pages are undated, so their disclosure window is uncertain [>NVO-E36, >E37, >E38]. The Chief AI Officer item shows only an updated timestamp [>NVO-E20]. Rows drawn from job postings take 6 October 2026 as their first public date, because no page shows a date-posted field [>NVO-E34, >E35].
- Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events.
- Recruitment: each reviewer enumerated the 422 listings in the careers search API and screened them with a common title filter, adding postings outside the filter. Only the 25 postings classified are in the table.
- Two independent reviewers searched Novo Nordisk, and the final rows are their source-verified union. That union contains rows that each reviewer missed, but it does not show that both did not miss the same events. The OpenFold join, the only counted change found by one reviewer, came from reviewer B's search phase [>NVO-E09]. No row is unverified.
Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)
- Novo Nordisk has four technology arrangements with stated discovery scope: Gefion compute access with an NVIDIA model collaboration [>NVO-E12, >E13], OpenAI [>NVO-E25], AWS as preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner with a London hub [>NVO-E28, >E29], and Anthropic [>NVO-E30]. Staff also describe a Research Collaboration Platform built on AWS [>NVO-E11]. Leadership sits in several places: a Chief AI Officer with an enterprise AI agenda [>NVO-E20], an AI & Digital Innovation organisation that includes the cRWE team [>NVO-E15, >E34, >R14], an AI Product Engineering team that builds on platforms from internal providers [>NVO-E35, >R22], and a new R&D IT architecture role covering AI priorities [>NVO-R15]. Who holds decision rights over choosing AI models and compute for discovery work, and how are the interfaces between these units and the four partnerships governed? Does a discovery team's purchase of an AI tool pass through the AWS preferred-provider agreement, R&D IT architecture or another route?
- The two T2 postings place lab automation for target discovery in TIM, Oxford, to onboard assays onto end-to-end screening platforms and scale data generation, with reference to FAIR data practices [>NVO-R12, >R13, >E36]. Laboratory IT systems for QC and ASAT labs sit in a Computerised Laboratory Systems department within Enterprise IT and Quality [>NVO-R07, >R09], R&D IT architecture covers R&D applications, platforms and data [>NVO-R15], and the enterprise DataCore platform is built on Databricks [>NVO-R16]. What is the remit of each unit for research lab automation and lab data systems? Who decides on new screening automation and data capture tools for research labs, and how is funding for them set while the company-wide transformation targets DKK 8 billion of annualised savings [>NVO-E16]?
