Pfizer

Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.

Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.

Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.

Summary

The reviewed sources identify five T1 initiatives involving Pfizer with a qualifying commitment change in the year to 5 October 2026: a Boltz collaboration, a Chai Discovery licence, the LIGAND-AI consortium, a Pfizer Ventures seed investment, and a Pfizer plan to expand to more than 1,200 GPUs over two years, largely for R&D AI [>PFE-E07, >E14, >E20, >E08, >E09]. Telescope Innovations reports that it installed a second self-driving lab at Pfizer in January 2026, under a 2024 agreement [>PFE-E18, >E15]. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 6 classified R&D requisitions across the two themes [>PFE-R01 to >R04, >R08, >R09]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Pfizer's own Q4 2025 prepared remarks are the source for the GPU row [>PFE-E09]. The remarks tie the GPUs to R&D application of AI in general, which also covers development; the row is placed in T1 because the next sentence names discovery [>PFE-E09]. Pfizer Ventures publications later confirm the two venture investments [>PFE-E03, >E08]. Reviewers flagged both as a weak T1 fit, because the investees are therapeutics companies whose platforms use AI or machine learning [>PFE-E03, >E08]. From rule set v0.4.3 both rows are marked as venture equity investments, so they can be filtered out of the T1 counts; the counts shown here include them [>PFE-E03, >E08]. We found no Pfizer-authored confirmation of the PostEra, XtalPi, Boltz, Chai or LIGAND-AI items in the reviewed sources, and pfizer.com could not be read [>PFE-E01, >E02, >E07, >E14, >E20].

The Cartography round is dated only to October 2025, a month that spans the boundary between the two years. It counts as first disclosed in the prior year, but not as a change known to have happened in either year [>PFE-E03]. LIGAND-AI started on 1 November 2025, according to the IHI factsheet, and was first announced on 20 January 2026 [>PFE-E20].

Counted by event date, T1 has 2 initiatives with a qualifying commitment change in the prior year (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025) and 5 in the year to 5 October 2026 [>PFE-E01, >E02; >PFE-E07, >E08, >E09, >E14, >E20]. Counted by first disclosure, T1 has 3 and 5; the difference is Cartography [>PFE-E03]. T2 has no qualifying commitment change in either year under either count. The only T2 rows are Telescope progress reports and an installation under the July 2024 agreement, which count as milestones: two first disclosed in the prior year and one this year [>PFE-E16, >E17, >E18]. We identified no negative change in either theme. Coverage is rated partial in every searched cell for both years, because pfizer.com could not be read and no FY2026 10-K exists yet, so no comparison between the two years is made.

Identified recruitment

Reviewers screened 368 archived Pfizer job descriptions by title, retrieved on 6 October 2026 (reviewer B notes, round four). We classified 15 from their duties. Of these, 6 are R&D roles in the two themes [>PFE-R01 to >R04, >R08, >R09]. Split by theme they are 4 T1 and 3 T2, because one role is tagged to both themes and counted once in each [>PFE-R01]. A further three are manufacturing data and AI roles, two are commercial AI or analytics roles in China and India, and one is a Digital and Technology rotational programme [>PFE-R10 to >R12, >R13, >R14, >R15]. Three are out of scope: process development roles that were T2 under rule set v0.4.2 and are outside the themes under the v0.4.3 boundary [>PFE-R05 to >R07]. These are open requisitions on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.

The R&D postings name roles in five areas: - two ML/AI cheminformatics scientists (principal and senior) in the cADME group at Groton, building property prediction, SAR and QSAR models for hit-to-lead and lead optimisation [>PFE-R02, >R03] - a senior AI/ML engineer in Vaccines Research at Pearl River, to lead implementation of an AI-ready research data ecosystem and predictive models that inform vaccine design and candidate prioritisation; the role is tagged to both themes [>PFE-R01] - an AI Oncology Portfolio Lead in San Diego, using AI-driven analysis to prioritise discovery and preclinical programmes; this is portfolio decision support and a borderline T1 call [>PFE-R04] - a high-content imaging scientist in Discovery Biology and Pharmacology at Groton [>PFE-R09] - a head of immunodiagnostics in Vaccines R&D Clinical Immunology and Diagnostics at Pearl River, leading assays for vaccine clinical trials under GCLP and cGMP guidelines, with a focus on automation and robotic sample handling; rule set v0.4.2 treats this regulated R&D lab as theme 2, and the classification is borderline [>PFE-R08]

The three process development postings are a bioprocess automation and digitisation scientist in upstream process development at Andover, and principal and senior scientists in particulate materials characterisation and digital sciences in Drug Product Design at Groton. They are process development, so they are out of scope under the v0.4.3 boundary [>PFE-R05 to >R07].

Posting dates are relative Workday labels, such as "Posted 28 Days Ago", which may reflect reposts, so posting dates are not reliable.

LinkedIn Premium company insights, read through an Ortent account on 6 October 2026, show Research openings up 19% over six months and total headcount up 9% over a year (aggregate LinkedIn member data). These are generic function figures. They do not measure AI or lab-automation hiring and are context only.

Technology mentions in recruitment

Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. - Stated as the employer's own system: the Andover process development posting describes "our in-house bioprocess automation and digitization platform", an OPC UA-based system connecting bioreactors, analysers and PAT instruments to control logic and data infrastructure [>PFE-R05]. OPC UA is a protocol, not a product, and no vendor is named. This wording is specific to that role, a process development role outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3. - Integration responsibilities: the high-content imaging scientist is to partner with the high-throughput screening team and use its automated systems for imaging and flow cytometry screens. No product is named [>PFE-R09]. - Lists of examples: the cheminformatics postings list RDKit, OpenEye and DeepChem, with scikit-learn and Torch, MLflow, Neptune or SageMaker, and Luigi, Airflow, Dagster, Prefect or Kubeflow [>PFE-R02, >R03]. The Vaccines AI/ML engineer lists PyTorch, TensorFlow or equivalent, and cloud and/or HPC environments [>PFE-R01]. The bioprocess posting's "Nice to Have" block, which it calls examples rather than requirements, lists DeltaV, Rockwell, Siemens, Kepware, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, Elasticsearch, Streamlit, GitHub Actions and AMBR systems [>PFE-R05]. The particulate materials postings, process development roles outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3, list Python, R, MATLAB or similar [>PFE-R06, >R07]. - Required experience: the immunodiagnostics role requires proficiency with LIMS and DoE software. No product is named [>PFE-R08].

Deployment evidence

  • Telescope Innovations reports that installation of its second self-driving lab at Pfizer was completed in January 2026, under the multi-year master agreement announced in July 2024 [>PFE-E18, >E15]. Telescope describes the installation as a milestone in the transition from collaborative R&D to potential full-scale deployment [>PFE-E18]. The release carries no Pfizer quote, and we found no Pfizer confirmation [>PFE-E18].
  • Two earlier Telescope releases, in January and February 2025, report continued self-driving lab research under the agreement. Reviewers judged both weak, because neither describes a concrete step [>PFE-E16, >E17].
  • Pfizer's Q1 2026 prepared remarks say "We are embedding AI into each functional line in R&D." It claims AI use across R&D but names no system [>SRC-PFE-Q1R26].
  • On the Q4 2025 call, Pfizer's Chief Executive Officer said R&D savings for reinvestment come from deploying AI, "which already happened in 2025 with excellent results". The passage gives no metric and covers all of R&D [>SRC-PFE-Q4T25].
  • The Q2 2026 results charts list "Progress with making petabytes of data AI ready" under R&D. This describes work under way [>SRC-PFE-Q2C26].
  • The FY2025 10-K says Pfizer has "begun deploying AI in various parts of our internal and external operations, including in R&D". This is risk-factor text and is treated as context only [>SRC-PFE-10K25].
  • We found no adoption or benefit metric for AI in discovery or for lab data systems in the reviewed sources. The Q2 2026 10-Q reports about $500 million of cost savings from pipeline focus and optimisation initiatives "including the expansion of our digital capabilities", with no share given for digital or AI [>SRC-PFE-10Q26].

Context

Pfizer's FY2025 10-K lists "Scale AI across our business" among four 2026 priorities [>SRC-PFE-10K25]. The Q2 2026 results charts list "Build an end-to-end AI-native R&D organization" [>SRC-PFE-Q2C26]. On the Q4 2025 call, the R&D head said Pfizer is recruiting and embedding AI engineers in each R&D function, including discovery. No number was given [>PFE-E10]. A BiopharmaTrend item dated 14 October 2024 reports a Pfizer partnership with Singapore's Ignition AI Accelerator spanning discovery, patient recruitment, HCP communication and manufacturing. The underlying announcement date was not found, and the item is recorded as an enterprise programme [>PFE-E21].

CDO Magazine reported on 3 February 2026 that Jeremy Forman had been promoted from VP Global R&D AI, Data and Analytics to Chief AI, Data and Analytics Officer, citing a LinkedIn update; the effective date is not stated [>PFE-E11]. On 6 July 2026 it reported Dennis Hancock's promotion to CIO and EVP, leading enterprise-wide technology, digital and AI strategy [>PFE-E12]. Both are enterprise-wide roles with no stated discovery remit, recorded as context with subject governance under rule set v0.4.2 [>PFE-E11, >E12]. A Pfizer story about its 2025 AI Festival, with a provisional publication date of December 2025, names Berta Rodriguez Hervas as Chief AI and Analytics Officer [>SRC-PFE-AIFEST]. The reviewed sources do not state how these titles relate or when each appointment took effect.

We identified no Pfizer job cuts, site exits or programme pauses in the searched sources, and no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes. Reviewers set aside a 2022 CytoReason extension and Pfizer's February 2022 Open Targets membership as outside the windows (reviewer B notes, round four). That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.

Coverage limits

  • The pfizer.com newsroom and leadership pages were blocked by a bot challenge, so Pfizer-hosted copies of partner announcements could not be checked. SEC EDGAR refused automated access.
  • Coverage is partial in every cell for both themes and both years. No FY2026 10-K exists yet, so this year has no full-year report, and one reviewer did not review the Q3 2025 earnings materials.
  • No dedicated acquisition search was run, and one reviewer ran no capacity web search. Leadership, open release and regulatory programme coverage relies on earlier prototype searches.
  • Patents were not counted, and preprint servers were not searched. Publication counts are raw query counts, and Pfizer's query wording differs from other companies' [PFE-E22].
  • Requisitions are a screened candidate set, not a full census. Technology mentions were not extracted for the manufacturing, commercial and graduate postings [>PFE-R10 to >R15].
  • The Cartography media reports of 1 and 2 October 2025 are not bundled [>PFE-E03]. The Chai release was read through a BioSpace copy of the Business Wire release [>PFE-E14].
  • No Pfizer row is marked unverified.

Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)

  1. Boltz will refine its models on Pfizer's historical data and build custom models with discovery teams, the Chai licence includes a custom model tailored to Pfizer's workflows, and the XtalPi expansion targets predictive models for Pfizer's proprietary chemical space [>PFE-E07, >E14, >E02]. Pfizer is also expanding GPU capacity largely for R&D AI and recruiting ML cheminformatics scientists in cADME [>PFE-E09, >R02, >R03]. Who holds decision rights over which external models are adopted, and how are the interfaces between partner platforms, Pfizer data and in-house compute governed? How do the R&D AI, data and analytics function and the enterprise technology roles divide these decisions [>PFE-E11, >E12]?
  2. Telescope describes its second self-driving lab at Pfizer as a step towards potential full-scale deployment [>PFE-E18]. A process development posting describes an in-house, OPC UA-based bioprocess automation and digitisation platform, and Drug Product Design is recruiting for lab workflows that combine automation, AI and digital tools; both are process development, outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3 [>PFE-R05, >R06, >R07]. What is the remit of the in-house platform relative to the Telescope labs? Who decides whether self-driving labs move beyond the collaboration, and how would procurement and funding for that step be decided?
