Takeda
Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.
Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.
Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.
Summary
The reviewed sources identify four external AI-discovery collaboration announcements involving Takeda in the year to 5 October 2026. Public recruitment and company material describe development of the Lab of Tomorrow and its AIRx and DAR units. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 23 classified R&D requisitions across the two themes. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Apart from the AIRx and DAR row, every item in the table was announced first by the partner. Takeda confirmed five of those six in its own documents between June and September 2026; the Boltz collaboration is the exception. Under rule set v0.4.2 the second Nabla Bio collaboration is a new commitment, separate from the earlier pilot, because the release says it builds on the pilot but does not say it extends or expands it [>TAK-E07, >E06].
AIRx, DAR and the Lab of Tomorrow have no stated creation or build-start date. 27 June 2026 is the earliest public mention found, so these rows count as first disclosed this year. They are not counted as changes known to have happened this year.
The same searches were run in both years for seven of nine event types, including partnerships. On that basis, we identified no qualifying AI-discovery partnership announcements in the prior-year search. Corporate venture and publications were not covered equally, so no overall comparison is made.
Identified recruitment
On 6 October 2026 the careers sitemap listed 819 live postings. We classified 38 from their duties. Of these, 23 are R&D roles in the two themes [>TAK-R01 to >R38]. Split by theme they are 16 T1 and 9 T2, because two roles are tagged to both themes and counted once in each [>TAK-R33, >R35]. A further four are plant or quality roles, one is an enterprise AI and data platform role in Bengaluru, and ten are out of scope. Four of these were T2 roles under rule set v0.4.2 and are process development or CMC roles, outside the themes under the v0.4.3 boundary: two analytical development data and statistics heads in Pharmaceutical Sciences, a data scientist for biotherapeutics process development and an engineering fellow for synthetic molecule process development data architecture [>TAK-R21, >R22, >R26, >R32]. Two others are DNA-encoded library roles noted as R&D roles outside the themes [>TAK-R29, >R30]. These are open requisitions on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.
The R&D postings name roles across the Lab of Tomorrow programme: - business leads for AI-native target identification, small-molecule, large-molecule, discovery automation and end-point generation, each showing 8 September 2026 [>TAK-R16 to >R20] - technical product owners under several of these [>TAK-R04 to >R07] - AIRx leads for discovery biology, DMPK and modelling, nonclinical safety and external partnership management [>TAK-R38, >R15, >R36, >R34] - a search and evaluation lead for AI and automation in discovery [>TAK-R35] - a Lab of Tomorrow automation lead at Shonan [>TAK-R11]
Many postings show 26 August 2026, which looks like a site refresh, so posting dates are not reliable.
LinkedIn Premium company insights, read through an Ortent account on 6 October 2026, show Research openings up 26% over six months and total headcount down 1% over a year (aggregate LinkedIn member data). These are generic function figures. They do not measure AI or lab-automation hiring and are context only.
Technology mentions in recruitment
Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. - Named as existing systems: TetraScience and SAIL, described in two AIRx postings as "AIRx data systems" [>TAK-R34, >R36]. - Integration responsibilities: product owners and the Shonan automation lead are to integrate with or work alongside ELN and LIMS. No product is named [>TAK-R04 to >R07, >R11]. The two analytical development data heads, process development roles outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3, are to work alongside LIMS, ELN and chromatography data systems [>TAK-R21, >R22]. - Lists of examples: the business lead roles list ELN and LIMS among preferred software experience [>TAK-R16, >R17, >R19, >R20]. The Molecular AI scientist role lists AlphaFold2/3, RoseTTAFold, Chai-1 or Boltz; GCP, AWS or Azure; PyTorch and/or JAX; and Claude Code or Codex [>TAK-R27]. - Outside R&D: a Lexington quality role states it works "primarily with LabWare LIMS and MODA" [>TAK-R12].
Deployment evidence
- Takeda's 2026 integrated report says it uses advanced models to predict how molecules will behave, to identify candidates earlier and optimise their design [>SRC-TAK-AIR2026]. The same passage says virtual experiments predict drug stability, impurity profiles and formulation performance. That is process development (CMC) work, which this radar groups with manufacturing, so it is outside the two themes [>SRC-TAK-AIR2026]. We found no adoption or benefit metric for either in the reviewed sources.
- The 2025 integrated report said Takeda was piloting a Nabla Bio protein design model [>TAK-E06].
- Consortium results published by Apheris on 14 September 2026, co-authored by two Takeda employees, report that Takeda and four other members each fine-tuned OpenFold3 on their own structures. The disclosure states that Takeda provided funding for the consortium [>TAK-E05].
- Atinary reported opening its own self-driving lab in Kendall Square, described as an expanded partnership with Takeda, in November 2024, under a collaboration announced in February 2024 [>TAK-E02, >E01]. Under rule AR7a the facility is Atinary's, so it is recorded as context, not as Takeda lab digitalisation. A Takeda automation lead presented an autonomous high-throughput experimentation workflow in synthetic molecule process development in 2025 [>TAK-E03]. That is process development, so under the v0.4.3 boundary it is recorded as context, not as T2 lab digitalisation. Both come from partner sources and describe capability with no stated start date.
- The Lab of Tomorrow, AIRx and DAR are described as being built or created. We found no evidence that they are complete [>TAK-E12 to >E14].
Context
Andy Plump, President of R&D, will retire in June 2027 (Takeda announcement, 10 September 2026) [>SRC-TAK-PLUMP]. No successor had been announced in the reviewed sources. Takeda set up an enterprise Transformation Office in January 2026 [>TAK-E09] and targets more than JPY 200 billion of annualised gross savings by FY2028 [>SRC-TAK-T05, FY2025 results presentation].
Media reported about 250 Massachusetts job cuts in March 2026 [>TAK-E22] and up to about 200 in Vienna, mainly biologics R&D, in June 2026 [>TAK-E19]. Takeda and Veritas In Silico ended a 2023 research agreement in April 2026 [>TAK-E18], and Takeda exited cell therapy research in October 2025 [>TAK-E20]. None of these is linked to AI in discovery or lab digitalisation in its source, and we identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.
Coverage limits
- Corporate venture was searched by web search only, because takedaventures.com could not be reached.
- Patents were not counted. Publication counts are raw query counts.
- The internet archive could not be reached, so careers-page history could not date AIRx, DAR or the Lab of Tomorrow.
- Business Wire blocked access; the Nabla release was read through copies.
- Careers search pages are disallowed by robots.txt. Roles were found through the sitemap and individual job pages.
Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)
- Two postings name TetraScience and SAIL as AIRx data systems, while several new roles must integrate with existing ELN and LIMS systems that no posting names. What is the remit of the AIRx data systems relative to those existing systems? Who decides on additions, and how are the interfaces between them governed?
- Takeda is recruiting an AIRx external partnership management lead and a search and evaluation lead for AI and automation in discovery. What is the remit and what are the decision rights of these roles in evaluating external tools? How does procurement for the Lab of Tomorrow run, and is its funding committed across the change of R&D President in 2027 and the enterprise savings programme?
