UCB
Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Company scope is UCB as a whole; the scope note sets no restriction, and the tables record no separately listed UCB subsidiary. Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.
Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.
Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.
Summary
The reviewed sources identify three T1 initiatives with an AI-discovery commitment change involving UCB first disclosed in the year to 5 October 2026, and one in the year before [>UCB-E01, >E07, >E09, >E17]. They are a licence to use the XtalFold biologics AI platform of Ailux Biologics, a division of XtalPi; the acquisition of the IMIDomics Patient Insight Business, whose platform applies machine learning and AI to find therapeutic targets; DARC, a three-year in-silico antibody design collaboration with the University of Southampton; and a new Barcelona R&D Hub that a job posting says is building an AI-powered precision medicine platform [>UCB-E01, >E07, >E17, >E09]. The only T2 commitment identified is the Arkelia research and development building at Braine-l'Alleud, under construction since February 2025, and its place in T2 rests on a borderline call [>UCB-E04]. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 4 relevant R&D requisition postings across the two themes, none with ambiguous vacancy status [>UCB-R01, >R02, >R03, >R09]. Five lab systems and data postings for QC, process development and CMC Development Sciences labs, counted in T2 under rule set v0.4.2, are process development under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary and are no longer counted [>UCB-R04 to >R08]. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.
Announced commitments
| First public | What was announced | Terms disclosed | Issued by | First UCB confirmation | ID |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 Jan 2025 | Licence agreement under which Ailux Biologics grants UCB a non-exclusive licence to use XtalFold, an AI-based structure software suite, "for the discovery and engineering of biologics" | Not disclosed | UCB and XtalPi (joint release, ucb.com), UCB executives quoted | Same release; UCB story the same day | UCB-E01 |
| 10 Feb 2025 | Start of construction of the Arkelia research and development facility at the Braine-l'Alleud campus, for research in neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation and epilepsy and some early development work; the release says "With cutting-edge automated systems and advanced scientific tools, this investment will enhance" UCB's R&D capabilities | Over 100 million euros for the whole facility; about 170 colleagues; fully operational by mid-2028 | UCB | Same release | UCB-E04 |
| 27 Apr 2026 | DARC, the Digital Antibody Research Collaboration, "focused on developing an end-to-end platform for the in-silico design of therapeutic antibodies" | Three-year initiative; funding not disclosed | UCB and the University of Southampton (joint release, UCB UK affiliate site) | Same release | UCB-E17 |
| 1 May 2026 | UCB "has acquired" the IMIDomics Patient Insight Business, gaining its personnel, laboratories, omics datasets and analytic platform; the release says these assets underpin a precision medicine platform "which applies advanced biostatistics, machine learning, and AI to uncover new therapeutic targets" | Financial details not disclosed; biobank contributions from over 17,000 patients | UCB and IMIDomics (joint release, ucb.com) | Same release; 2026 Half-Year Financial Report | UCB-E07 |
| 22 Sep 2026 (posting date in page data; uncertain) | Job posting: "As a founding member of our new Barcelona R&D Hub, you will help build the AI-powered precision medicine platform", which turns clinical and molecular patient data into insights for drug discovery | None | UCB (careers posting) | Same posting | UCB-E09 |
UCB published two of these five items itself, the Arkelia release and the Barcelona posting [>UCB-E04, >E09]. The other three were issued jointly, with XtalPi, the University of Southampton and IMIDomics [>UCB-E01, >E17, >E07]. Each carries UCB confirmation on the day it appeared [>UCB-E01, >E04, >E07, >E09, >E17]. The DARC release sits on the UCB UK affiliate site, not in the global newsroom [>UCB-E17].
UCB announced a strategic equity investment in IMIDomics on 4 March 2024, before both windows [>UCB-E06]. That release states no AI or computational platform, so the investment is venture context under C42-3; it is kept as the earlier dated action under the same parent as the 2026 acquisition (AR8). The DARC release calls DARC "a significant expansion" of a longstanding relationship with the University of Southampton, but no earlier dated deal is recorded and DARC states its own scope, so it is a new commitment under its own parent (C42-1) [>UCB-E17].
By event date, we counted one T1 initiative with a qualifying commitment change in W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025), the XtalFold licence, and two in W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026), the IMIDomics acquisition and DARC [>UCB-E01, >E07, >E17]. By first disclosure, the T1 count is one in W0 and three in W1, adding the Barcelona R&D Hub [>UCB-E09]. The hub's creation date is not stated, so it counts only by first disclosure and is listed as event date uncertain. T2 is one in W0 in both views, the Arkelia facility, and zero in W1 [>UCB-E04]. No milestones were disclosed in either theme or year. Existing capabilities first disclosed numbered one in T1 in W0 and one in T1 in W1 [>UCB-E02, >E08]. These have no stated start date and are not counted as changes. An undated drug discovery page describing the same CADD capability has no established public date and counts in neither year [>UCB-E03]. We identified no qualifying negative change in either theme in the searched sources.
Two adjudication calls each decide one count, and the adjudicator recorded both as not settled. The Barcelona R&D Hub is kept apart from the IMIDomics acquisition because no source ties them (AR9, C42-1): the posting names neither IMIDomics nor an acquisition, the acquisition release names Barcelona only as the home of the VHIR biobank, and the half-year 2026 call transcript calls IMIDomics "a Barcelona-based biotech" without mentioning a hub [>UCB-E09, >E07]. If the hub is the IMIDomics integration, it becomes an existing capability under the IMIDomics parent and T1 W1 by first disclosure falls from three to two; the event-date view stays at two. Arkelia counts in T2 on one general sentence about automated systems, with no system named, and the investment figure covers the whole building [>UCB-E04]. Read as site context instead, T2 W0 falls from one to zero in both views, and T2 has no qualifying change in either year. The opposite readings of borderline clarifications C42-2, C42-4 and C42-12 change no count: the screened in-licensing and acquisition releases state no AI-derived discovery, no UCB accelerator or challenge was found, and no separately listed subsidiary is involved.
Coverage is partial for both themes in both years. The company release archive, annual report, one-search-per-event-type and negative-event families are complete in every cell, and the consortium and academic families are complete for T1 only. The results material family is complete for W1 only, and the partner newswire and corporate venture families are partial in every cell. The coverage table marks the results material, partner newswire and corporate venture families as not comparable between the years, so no comparison between the years is made.
Identified recruitment
On 6 October 2026 both reviewers enumerated 348 listings in the careers.ucb.com English sitemap, and both title filters hit the same 14 requisitions, two of them false positives on "Regenerative". The reviewers classified 27 postings from their duties, 17 of them screened by both. We observed 4 relevant requisition postings in the R&D theme class, 1 T1 and 4 T2; the one role tagged both themes appears in each split [>UCB-R09]. No UCB posting has its openings field populated, so vacancy status is not recorded for any of the 4 and none has ambiguous vacancy status. A further 12 are enterprise roles, 2 are plant quality roles and 9 are out of scope. These are requisition postings listed on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.
The posting tagged both themes is a Lead Full-Stack AI Product Engineer in the Translational Analytics team of the new Barcelona R&D Hub [>UCB-R09]. The role is to "develop and manage the next phase of our in-house precision medicine platform", helping researchers use clinical and molecular patient data "to make informed decisions in drug discovery". It counts in T1 for those discovery duties and in T2 because the role runs the platform's data management and standards [>UCB-R09].
The other T2 postings describe research computing, research data and lab systems roles: - a Head of Scientific Computing & Technology in Brussels, on the Digital Technology for R&eD leadership team, leading a team that supports "scientific software applications and compute platforms used by researchers across the organization", with a focus on high-performance compute [>UCB-R01] - two Data Foundations Lead postings, in Boston and Slough, in the Patient Solutions Digital Strategy & Innovation team, to define metadata, ontologies, identifiers and data standards and to promote FAIR data principles across Research and Early Development [>UCB-R02, >R03]
Five postings that rule set v0.4.2 counted in T2 are process development, so under the v0.4.3 theme 2 boundary they are out of scope and not counted: - a Digital Technology Lead for Laboratory Systems & Integration in Braine-l'Alleud, in the Digital Technology Industrial Solutions team, supporting Quality Control and Process Development laboratories across a global manufacturing network [>UCB-R04] - a Digital Technology QC and Process Development Lead in Braine-l'Alleud, in the QC and MSAT team, to set the digital roadmap for QC Laboratories and Process Development Laboratories and lead implementation of platforms including LIMS, CDS and LES [>UCB-R05] - two Digital Technology leads for single systems in CMC Development Sciences, in Slough and Braine-l'Alleud, owning workstations, applications and connected technologies that support laboratory instruments [>UCB-R06, >R07] - a CMC Development Data Steward in Braine-l'Alleud, to apply data governance standards across CMC Development Sciences systems [>UCB-R08]
One classification is borderline. One reviewer tagged the Head of Scientific Computing role to both themes; the adjudicator ruled T2 only because no discovery activity is named (C42-21), and read the other way the T1 split would be 2 [>UCB-R01].
Enterprise postings include two Principal Computational Methodologists in Biometrics and Data Science, whose AI and machine learning work supports clinical development and biomarker discovery rather than named discovery activities (C42-21) [>UCB-R10, >R11]; three Data Science Leads in Global Advanced Analytics [>UCB-R13, >R14, >R15]; two AI and Data Literacy Leads in the Patient Evidence organisation [>UCB-R17, >R18]; and a Forward Deployed AI Engineer in Technology Strategy & Solutions [>UCB-R19]. The two plant quality roles are a QC laboratory LIMS expert at Bulle and a QA officer for lab systems data oversight at Braine-l'Alleud [>UCB-R23, >R24]. A Pharmacometrics Lead is out of scope as R&D work outside the themes (C42-20) [>UCB-R12], as is a Research & Early Development Digital Academy Lead [>UCB-R25].
Posting dates come from a field in the page job data that may record a refresh, and no visible date-posted field was confirmed, so they are not reliable.
No LinkedIn company insights were collected for UCB.
Technology mentions in recruitment
Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 38 UCB mentions: 7 explicit use, 10 required experience, 3 preferred experience, 1 planned implementation and 17 alternatives. None is classed integration or environment, or unclear. - Named as existing systems in R&D postings: only categories. The Head of Scientific Computing's team supports compute platforms "used by researchers across the organization" [>UCB-R01], and the Barcelona role works on "our in-house precision medicine platform" [>UCB-R09]. Each is recorded as explicit use because the posting states the employer's own system; no product is named. This is role-specific wording. - Named as existing systems outside R&D: "our Azure Databricks-based Next-Gen Data Platform" and a Reltio Master Data Management environment in a commercial data platform role [>UCB-R21]; Azure DevOps and GitHub in a DevOps role [>UCB-R20]; and the Bulle site's own LIMS system in a plant QC role [>UCB-R23]. - Required experience: cloud platforms [>UCB-R01]; cloud-based systems and containerised workflows, Python and R [>UCB-R09]; PK-Sim/MoBi, Simcyp, GastroPlus and MATLAB [>UCB-R12]; Python and SQL [>UCB-R16]. - Preferred experience: LIMS, "idéalement LabWare" (ideally LabWare) [>UCB-R23]; NONMEM [>UCB-R12]; R [>UCB-R16]. - Planned implementation: automated code quality checks using SonarQube [>UCB-R20]. - Lists of examples: LIMS, CDS and LES among the digital platforms the QC and Process Development lead is to implement [>UCB-R05]; ontology management, semantic technologies or knowledge graphs [>UCB-R02, >R03]; foundation models and large language models, Python and HPC [>UCB-R10, >R11]; Python or R [>UCB-R13, >R14, >R15].
No ELN or LIMS product is named in the R&D postings, and no ELN, LIMS or cloud category is recorded as explicit use in them. The one LIMS recorded as explicit use is in a plant QC posting [>UCB-R23].
Deployment evidence
- The Integrated Annual Report 2024 says "By combining the power of combinatorial biology with advanced rational drug design, utilizing artificial intelligence, we can identify highly promising therapeutic candidates with precision and efficiency" [>UCB-E02]. UCB's drug discovery page says its small-molecule work includes "using computer-aided drug design (CADD) with artificial intelligence (AI)"; the page is undated [>UCB-E03]. Neither states a start date.
- The Integrated Annual Report 2025 says "Our collaborations with Schrödinger are also integrating advanced modeling and computational design, to accelerate discovery and enhance data quality" [>UCB-E08]. Neither reviewer found a dated announcement of these collaborations.
- The XtalFold release quotes UCB's Head of Global CADD: "Our decision to license this tool comes after extensive testing and evaluation against other computational approaches" [>UCB-E01]. That describes evaluation before the licence. We found no statement that XtalFold is in use.
- The Barcelona posting asks the engineer to improve the platform "from current prototype to production-ready product" [>UCB-R09, >E09]. The platform therefore exists as a prototype; its production status is not established.
- Arkelia is under construction and is to be fully operational by mid-2028 [>UCB-E04]. We found no later update on the facility or its automated systems.
- The IMIDomics release says UCB "has acquired" the business [>UCB-E07]. We found no statement on how its analytic platform is being integrated.
- We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.
Context
Named heads in the commitment releases include Alexander Hillisch, Head of Global CADD, and Daniel Lightwood, Head of Antibody Discovery and Optimisation, in the XtalFold release [>UCB-E01]; Alistair Henry, Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, in the IMIDomics release [>UCB-E07]; Stevan Shaw, Head of UK Research, in the DARC release [>UCB-E17]; and Luc Uylenbroeck, Head of External Innovation and Operations, in the Arkelia release [>UCB-E04]. No appointment dates are stated. An executive rotation announced on 6 November 2025 moved Emmanuel Caeymaex from Chief Commercial Officer to Head of Patient Evidence; it carries no discovery AI or lab data remit and is excluded [>UCB-E21].
Clinical and biomarker AI is context under AR6 and C42-8. UCB and Domino Data Lab announced on 19 May 2025 a collaboration to modernise a statistical computing environment, used for clinical development [>UCB-E05]. UCB partnered in 2024 with the IHI AutoPiX consortium on AI-driven imaging in rheumatic diseases [>UCB-E10]. The Integrated Annual Report 2025 says a Stanford University partnership "is exploring digital phenotyping and computational discovery of HS mechanisms" [>UCB-E16]. UCB's HS Vision Report 2026 calls that work "one of our biomarker studies", so it is context [>UCB-E16]; one reviewer read it as a T1 existing capability, which would change no commitment count.
Data access is context under AR7a. Citizen Health announced on 2 December 2025 a multi-year partnership with UCB in epilepsy and five rare disease indications, under which Citizen Health members who choose to share their data make up research cohorts; a UCB executive is quoted [>UCB-E22].
Enterprise programmes: UCB established a GenAI Hub in 2024 for AI ethics training and use-case guidance [>UCB-E11], and introduced mandatory "Responsible Use of AI" training for all employees in August 2025 [>UCB-E12]. Its half-year 2026 results attribute higher general and administrative expenses, EUR 135 million, to "accelerated digital transformation programs across the value chain" [>UCB-E19]. On 9 June 2026 Veeva announced that UCB is unifying its global safety operations on Veeva Safety Suite [>UCB-E15].
Sites: UCB selected Gwinnett County, Georgia, on 24 March 2026 for a US biologics manufacturing plant that is to use AI, robotics and automation; this is manufacturing, outside T2 [>UCB-E14, >E13]. UCB inaugurated a gene therapy facility at Braine on 24 April 2026, whose "fully integrated digital ecosystem" provides process control across 3,000 automation points in a clinical manufacturing pilot plant [>UCB-E18]. On 7 May 2026 UCB, Cancer Research UK and Cancer Research Horizons announced an oncology discovery and early development alliance that states no AI, computation or lab systems, so it is excluded [>UCB-E20].
We identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. The negative-event searches found no ending, termination or pause of a theme agreement, and the UCB restructuring and job-cut stories they returned predate both windows. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.
Coverage limits
- Searches completed on the review checklist in every cell: the company release archive, annual report, one-search-per-event-type and negative-event families. The consortium and academic families are complete for T1 and partial for T2, because neither reviewer ran a lab-data consortium or lab-automation academic search. The results material family is complete for W1 and partial for W0. The partner newswire and corporate venture families are partial in every cell. Each reviewer had a capped budget of nine web searches.
- Searches not run because the search budget ran out: web searches for the W0 results slides and transcripts; site-restricted PR Newswire, Business Wire and GlobeNewswire searches reaching W0; a T2 consortium search (Pistoia Alliance, Allotrope, lab data or FAIR data); a T2 academic search (laboratory automation, self-driving lab or research data); a "UCB Ventures" investment search; and six reserve queries, among them two Barcelona R&D hub searches that could settle the IMIDomics link, a Microsoft, NVIDIA or AWS research AI search, a Domino Data Lab release search and an XtalFold release search.
- The FY2024 and HY2025 results presentations and call transcripts are not linked from UCB's download centre, and guessed paths returned 404, so W0 results material was not read.
- Business Wire and GlobeNewswire were not fetched because of known blocks. The PR Newswire company pages do not reach back into W0.
- The UCB UK affiliate site held the DARC release outside the global newsroom [>UCB-E17]. Its press listing returned empty replies to one reviewer and its sitemap lists only the home page, so affiliate newsrooms were not enumerated.
- ucbventures.com and reports.ucb.com returned HTTP 429 Vercel security checkpoint pages. The venture portfolio was read only as generated summaries, and the online annual report was replaced by the PDFs on ucb.com. www.ucb.com rate-limited some requests, and every page needed was eventually retrieved; legacy ucb.com magazine paths returned 403. Fierce Biotech and xtalks.com returned 403, and a galvnews.com copy returned 404.
- A Lead Lab Orchestration posting in Boston was found only as a generated summary on xtalks.com, so it is not verified and is not in the tables.
- Annual-report first-public dates rest on the results release dates, with no filing timestamp, so they are marked uncertain [>UCB-E02, >E08]. The Barcelona hub's first-public date is the posting date in the page job data, also uncertain [>UCB-E09].
- Patents are not among the searched source families in the coverage table. Publication counts are raw Europe PMC query counts and are not events. The two reviewers used different Europe PMC term sets, so their counts are not comparable. UCB publicised a federated-learning paper on 18 March 2025; it is a publication, not an event (AR1).
- Recruitment: both reviewers enumerated the 348 listings in the English sitemap. Only the 27 postings classified are in the table.
- Two independent reviewers searched UCB, and the final rows are their source-verified union. Both found all five counted changes, but that does not show that both did not miss the same events. Ten rows were found by one reviewer only, none of them a counted change, among them Citizen Health, the gene therapy facility, the Georgia site selection and Veeva Safety Suite [>UCB-E22, >E18, >E14, >E15].
Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)
- Research computing, research data and lab systems roles sit in several units. Digital Technology for R&eD runs high-performance compute and scientific software for researchers, and its head works with Enterprise Architecture, Procurement and Legal and with a counterpart role that gathers scientific needs [>UCB-R01]. Patient Solutions Digital Strategy & Innovation sets data standards and FAIR practice across Research and Early Development [>UCB-R02, >R03]. Digital Technology Industrial Solutions, the QC and MSAT team and CMC Development Sciences each own lab systems for QC, process development and CMC development labs, which are outside T2 under the v0.4.3 boundary, and the QC and Process Development lead manages project and operational budgets and vendor engagements for platforms including LIMS, CDS and LES [>UCB-R04, >R05, >R06, >R07, >R08]. The Arkelia building, which the release says will have automated systems, is to be fully operational by mid-2028 [>UCB-E04]. What is each unit's remit for lab systems and scientific data in research as against development labs? Who decides on lab automation and lab informatics purchases for Arkelia, and how does Procurement take part in those decisions?
- UCB's stated AI-discovery activity combines an external licence evaluated by Global CADD [>UCB-E01], collaborations with Schrödinger [>UCB-E08], an academic in-silico antibody design collaboration announced with UCB's Head of UK Research quoted [>UCB-E17], an acquired analytic platform [>UCB-E07] and an in-house precision medicine platform at a new Barcelona R&D Hub, built in Translational Analytics [>UCB-E09, >R09]. The sources do not say whether the Barcelona platform is the acquired IMIDomics platform or a separate build. Who holds decision rights over licensing an external AI discovery tool rather than building one, and does such licensing go through Research, business development or Digital Technology procurement? Who owns the Barcelona platform, and how is it funded?
