Vertex

Ortent Life Sciences Radar, research beta. Evidence to 6 October 2026, rule set v0.4.3. Scope: AI and computation in drug discovery (T1), and research-lab digitalisation and scientific data systems (T2). Each ID in brackets links to its online source, and the source index at the end of this brief lists them.

Disclosure: Andrew Wyatt, Ortent's principal, was Chief Growth Officer at Sapio Sciences until April 2026. Software vendors, including Sapio and its competitors, appear in this brief only where public sources name them.

Status: research beta. Ortent has reviewed this brief; it has not been independently validated. It summarises activity identified in public sources. Search coverage varies by company and is set out under Coverage limits, and zero identified items does not mean no activity. It does not predict buying intent or measure operational maturity. For this radar, process and CMC development are grouped with manufacturing and excluded from the research-lab theme (T2); such work appears as context where it helps.

Summary

The reviewed sources identify no Vertex commitment change in AI-enabled discovery or company lab digitalisation in either year to 5 October 2026. That is a search result, not evidence of no activity, and the search of the earlier year was incomplete. Vertex job postings disclose an existing agentic AI co-scientist initiative, a Data and Computational Sciences organisation and a San Diego group that builds custom automated instruments for drug discovery [>VRTX-E05, >E06, >E07]. The 6 October recruitment snapshot contains 12 classified R&D requisitions across the two themes. These observations identify programmes and functions for further investigation; they do not establish procurement opportunity, deployment completion or net hiring.

Announced commitments

First public What was announced Terms disclosed Issued by First Vertex confirmation ID
n/a No qualifying commitment change identified in the searched sources n/a n/a n/a n/a

We identified no Vertex row that counts as a commitment change in either window in the searched sources. This does not show that Vertex made no commitments in AI discovery or lab digitalisation.

The most recent T1 commitment row we found predates both windows. On 16 July 2024 Genomics plc announced a three-year extension of its collaboration with Vertex "to use human genetics and machine learning" in drug discovery, under which the collaboration will run until 2026 [>VRTX-E01]. The release quotes Vertex's Senior Vice President and Head of Global Research. We found no Vertex confirmation on vrtx.com, and no renewal, lapse or end of the collaboration in the searched sources, so its status after 2026 is unknown.

By event date, we counted zero initiatives with a qualifying commitment change in T1 and in T2, in both W0 (5 October 2024 to 4 October 2025) and W1 (5 October 2025 to 5 October 2026). By first disclosure, the count is also zero in each theme and year. Three existing capabilities were first disclosed in W1, two in T1 and one in T2 [>VRTX-E05, >E06, >E07]. They have no stated start date and are not counted as changes.

The W0 search was partial for every event type, because Vertex results releases and presentations for that year could not be read. The W1 search was complete except for publications. Coverage is therefore not comparable between the years in any cell, and no comparison is made.

Identified recruitment

On 6 October 2026 we classified 30 Vertex requisitions from the Vertex careers site by their duties. Of these, 12 are R&D roles in the two themes (8 T1, 4 T2) [>VRTX-R01 to >R09, >R11, >R12, >R14]. A further 12 are enterprise roles, two are co-op internships (one tagged T2), and four are out of scope. One of the out-of-scope roles is a bench cell biology role noted as an R&D role outside the themes [>VRTX-R13]. Another, the cell and gene therapy analytical development head, was a T2 role under rule set v0.4.2 and is a process development (CMC) role under the v0.4.3 boundary [>VRTX-R10]. These are open requisitions on one day, not hires, headcount or a trend.

The T1 postings describe roles in discovery computation and AI: - a Director-level Scientific Fellow to lead the agentic AI co-scientist initiative across the scientific organisation [>VRTX-R01] - two senior principal scientists for agentic AI in discovery, one applying AI and agentic systems across the small-molecule design-make-test-analyse cycle and one building, testing and deploying agentic AI systems [>VRTX-R02, >R03] - an Executive Director, Data & Methods, reporting to the Head of Data & Computational Sciences and setting AI and computational strategy across Global Research [>VRTX-R04] - two computational chemists in Computational Drug Design [>VRTX-R05, >R06] - two computational genomics scientists, one for target discovery in San Diego and one embedded in cell and gene therapy early research [>VRTX-R07, >R08]

The T2 postings describe lab automation and lab technology roles: - a lab automation engineer at the Leiden Center research site, for cell and genetic therapy R&D processes [>VRTX-R09] - a director of cell and gene therapy research technology for the LC1/2 site, leading its lab technology platforms [>VRTX-R11] - a high-throughput biology scientist to build integrated robotic automation workflows [>VRTX-R12] - an optics and microscopy principal scientist in the San Diego Engineering & Applied Physics group [>VRTX-R14]

The two co-ops are in preformulation automation and in process chemistry using high-throughput experimentation and ML or Bayesian optimisation [>VRTX-R15, >R16]. The process chemistry co-op is process development, so under the v0.4.3 boundary it no longer carries a T2 tag [>VRTX-R16].

The analytical development head leads cell and gene therapy analytical development, testing and lab automation for process development and characterisation; the posting assigns about 20% of team resources to automation and about 5% to laboratory informatics. It is outside the themes under the v0.4.3 boundary [>VRTX-R10].

The enterprise roles cover an agentic AI platform (five requisitions) [>VRTX-R19 to >R21, R22a, R22b], an agent intelligence director [>VRTX-R23], engineering for VaiDA, which one posting calls "Vertex's AI experience tool" [>VRTX-R24, >R25], AI governance [>VRTX-R26], a data and AI platform [>VRTX-R17], and an enterprise knowledge graph "spanning clinical, research, regulatory, and commercial domains" [>VRTX-R18]. An AI transformation portfolio director in the DTE organisation lists Research & Preclinical Sciences within the portfolio scope [>VRTX-R27].

Twenty of the 30 postings show a Workday start date of 8 September 2026, which looks like a bulk repost, so posting dates are not reliable.

LinkedIn Premium company insights, read through an Ortent account on 6 October 2026, show Research openings up 71% over six months and total headcount unchanged (0%) over a year (aggregate LinkedIn member data). These are generic function figures. They do not measure AI or lab-automation hiring and are context only.

Technology mentions in recruitment

Mentions are classified from the exact posting wording. They do not establish installation, an incumbent contract or company-wide use. The table records 51 Vertex mentions: 8 explicit use, 1 integration or environment, 14 required experience, 1 preferred experience and 27 alternatives. - Named as existing systems: none in the 12 R&D theme postings. All eight explicit-use mentions sit in other roles (see the last bullet). - Integration responsibilities: the process chemistry co-op, outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3, must keep records in "a detailed and clearly written electronic laboratory notebook". No product is named [>VRTX-R16]. - Required experience: the lab automation engineer posting lists "Hamilton and Biomek automation programming" and "Scheduling software for integrated automation work cells" as skills; its duties line gives "Hamilton/Biomek/etc." as examples [>VRTX-R09]. The co-scientist lead needs expertise in LLMs, agentic systems and scientific foundation models [>VRTX-R01]. A computational genomics role requires R, Python and high-performance computing systems [>VRTX-R07]. - Preferred experience: Benchling, stated as "Preferred, not required", in the research technology director posting [>VRTX-R11]. - Lists of examples: HPC and/or cloud environments [>VRTX-R08]; Python, R or MATLAB [>VRTX-R12]; Excel, JMP or Python, and Power BI or HTML [>VRTX-R15]; Snowflake or Databricks [>VRTX-R17, >R18]; Azure AI Foundry and M365 Copilot [>VRTX-R21]; Workday and ServiceNow [>VRTX-R27]. - Outside the R&D theme roles: a bench cell biology posting, classed out of scope because automation is incidental to its function, is to "Operate, troubleshoot, and improve automated laboratory platforms, including Echo liquid handlers, Hamilton systems" [>VRTX-R13]. Enterprise postings say agents are built "using Snowflake Cortex AI, Databricks AI" [>VRTX-R23], that VaiDA and other initiatives are "built on Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Foundry" [>VRTX-R24], and that mobile apps are distributed through enterprise platforms "including Microsoft Intune" [>VRTX-R25]. This wording is specific to those roles. It does not establish scale or use in research.

No category (ELN, LIMS, cloud) is recorded as explicit use for Vertex.

Deployment evidence

  • A San Diego posting describes an existing Engineering & Applied Physics group of 20 physicists and engineers who "design and develop custom instruments that integrate cutting-edge technology and full automation" for Vertex's internal drug discovery pipeline [>VRTX-E07, >R14]. The group's start date is not stated.
  • Postings name "our agentic AI co-scientist initiative" as existing [>VRTX-E05]. The lead posting says the effort "will span both internal development of capabilities and rigorous evaluation of externally available tools" [>VRTX-R01]. This describes intent. We found no evidence that a co-scientist capability is in use.
  • A posting shows that a Data and Computational Sciences organisation exists with a Head [>VRTX-E06, >R04]. Its creation date is not stated.
  • The 2026 proxy statement lists, among 2025 achievements, "We continued to ensure information security, enhanced operational infrastructure, and innovative data and technology solutions." It names no initiative, and its scope is the enterprise, not R&D [>SRC-VRTX-PROXY2026].
  • We found no adoption or benefit metric for any of these items in the reviewed sources.

Context

Vertex's Chief Scientific Officer told BioCentury, in an interview published on 20 March 2025, "We use AI to try and say, what can we learn from those, and how can we design new molecules?", referring to existing molecules in the pain and cystic fibrosis programmes [>VRTX-E02]. The interview date is not stated. Vertex's CEO said at a Boston College Chief Executives Club event on 6 November 2025 that "it is not the case that we have a computer in the basement at Vertex and it's spitting out small molecules", and described AI's potential to cut the time spent drafting regulatory filings [>VRTX-E03]. Both are media reports of executive remarks and are context only.

The FY2025 10-K states that the Chief Digital and Information Officer is a Senior Vice President who reports to the Chief Operating and Financial Officer, in a passage on cybersecurity [>SRC-VRTX-10K2025]. The Head of Data & Computational Sciences is not named in the reviewed sources [>VRTX-E06]. The company's 2025 goals include "Continue to advance data and technology strategy" [>SRC-VRTX-PROXY2026].

The first author of an 11-company study of federated ADMET prediction models, first published in J Med Chem on 29 May 2026, is Vertex-affiliated. It is recorded as a publication, not an event [>VRTX-E04].

The Boston Globe reported on 11 June 2025 that Vertex would cut 140 jobs, including 125 in Providence, as it consolidated its Rhode Island offices; a Vertex spokesperson linked certain roles to the discontinued VX-264 type 1 diabetes device programme [>VRTX-E08]. Vertex's exit from AAV gene therapy vector work was first reported on 2 May 2025 [>VRTX-E09]. Neither is linked to AI in discovery or lab digitalisation in its source, and we identified no qualifying pause or cancellation in the two themes in the searched sources. That is a search result, not evidence that none occurred.

Coverage limits

  • W0 results releases and presentations (Q3 2024 to Q2 2025) were not read: investors.vrtx.com returned 403, news.vrtx.com gave a connection error and the internet archive was unavailable. Every W0 cell is therefore partial.
  • W0 newsroom coverage rests on an earlier archive scan of newsroom titles that was not re-run.
  • Patents were not searched and arXiv was not searched systematically. Publication counts are raw query counts.
  • Vertex hosts no call transcripts, so transcripts are missing from the searched sources.
  • Recruitment covers postings archived as candidates in the earlier prototype run, plus two added in review. Reviewer B notes that 271 other open Vertex postings were bulk-scanned by the prototype and not listed individually.
  • Web searches were not date-restricted. 10-K language counts are context only and were not redone; the FY2025 10-K narrative is shorter than FY2024's, which raises the rate.
  • Three event rows (VRTX-E06, E07, E09) and two requisitions (VRTX-R14, R16) were found by one reviewer and verified against the source. The Endpoints News report behind VRTX-E09 is not bundled; the row rests on a BioSpace article that cites it.

Two questions to investigate (Ortent's interpretation)

  1. The co-scientist lead is to evaluate "commercial, partnership, open-source, and internally developed options" and "inform build, buy, partner, or integrate decisions" [>VRTX-R01]. The Data & Methods head is to work with other technology leaders to "define AI, compute, and data infrastructure needs" [>VRTX-R04], and a scientist role sits between Drug Discovery, Data & Methods and DTE [>VRTX-R02]. Separate enterprise roles build an agentic AI platform and a knowledge graph that is to span research among other domains [>VRTX-R18 to >R23]. Who holds the decision to adopt an external AI discovery tool, and how is that tool evaluated, funded and bought? What is the interface between the research co-scientist work and the enterprise agent platform?
  2. The LC1/2 research technology director is to route site requirements "within Laboratory Solutions or peer DTE platform organizations", works through "a managed service provider model", and holds the site operating budget, while "the build/architecture decision rests with a peer platform owner" [>VRTX-R11]. The analytical development head, a process development role outside the themes under rule set v0.4.3, is to build laboratory informatics for automated equipment "partnering with Digital/IT functions" [>VRTX-R10], and a San Diego group builds its own automated instruments [>VRTX-E07]. What is the remit of Laboratory Solutions across research and analytical labs, who owns lab platform and vendor decisions, and how do site budgets relate to platform procurement?
